The Special Education Coordinator reports to the Manager, Special Programs and assists Special Education Teachers in aligning their services with identified student needs in a manner that is consistent with state and federal special education regulations. Functions as a member of the school leadership team with school administration and contracted providers.

Essential Functions: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.
  • Needs and supports efforts to improve compliance with federal and state guidelines by:
  • Facilitating Evaluation Meetings to include:
    • Ensuring student evaluation documentation conforms to federal, state and school guidelines; Produces training materials along with supporting documents to ensure the school’s special education policies and procedures are followed;
  • Ensuring Individualized Education Plans (IEP) documentation conforms to federal, state and school guidelines to include:
    • Meeting regularly with teachers to help interpret and produce special education documentation requirements that conform to federal, state and school guidelines;
    • Serving as an advisor and special consultant to principals, general education and special education teachers and parents of students with disabilities on identification, assessments, and special education requirements;
    • Monitoring completion of IEP attendance, reports, and services;
  • Interpreting data and determining what steps are needed to assist students academically;
    • Adapting learning plans to meet different needs and learning styles;
    • Modeling how to create an instructional environment favorable to learning and personal growth;
  • Communicates effectively with school administration and contracted providers;
  • Serves as Local Educational Agency (LEA) representative by:
    • Liaising with state department of education and other county-based agencies to expand school resources for programming needs;
    • Collaborating with academic and enrollment teams for appropriate course placement;
    • Monitoring confidential tracking database for returned IEPs;
  • Maintains appropriate, confidential records and provides timely reports; Maintains all required reports as assigned by the Manager, Special Programs student progress reports;
  • Ensures all new special education teachers are adequately trained on all school systems;
  • Supports efforts of Academic Administrators/Leads with the mentoring and monitoring of special education teachers’ professional growth;
  • Collaborates with special education and general education teachers to ensure full implementation of student accommodations and effective interventions in the general education classroom;
  • Collaborates with academic team stakeholder on all progress reports and report cards;
  • Ensures that assigned students participate in school-wide screenings, benchmarking, and mandated state assessments with accommodations as defined by the IEP;
  • Attends all required professional development;
  • Supports the school administration in the review of records for enrollment of special education students.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no formal supervisory responsibilities.

Minimum Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education AND
  • Three (3) years of special education teaching experience OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to clear required background check

Certificates and Licenses: None required.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Education
  • Teacher supervision or school leadership experience, especially in virtual or home-based setting
  • Experience with charter school environment
  • Ability to learn new technologies and tools
