Our Essex High School has temporary one-year position available for a Special Educator - Behavioral Specialist in our RYSE Program for the 2020-21 school year. The RYSE program offers students with social, emotional and behavioral challenges an opportunity to work on content area courses within a small group setting. Students spend at least half of their school day in mainstream class and participate in the EHS Employment Program. The goal of the RYSE Program is to assist students in developing appropriate social and behavioral skills in the school and in the community as they work towards earning a high school diploma. Students also receive direct instruction in one or more of the basic skills. A social worker is assigned to the RYSE Program. The social worker assists families with accessing community supports and services, acts as the liaison between the family and the school and works directly with the students.

EWSD is committed to considering out of state candidates who are eligible to hold a Vermont educator license but do not yet hold license in this state.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
- Hold (or be eligible to hold) a valid VT Educator license with a Special Educator or Consulting Teacher endorsement (3-82 or 3-85). Individuals who hold a corresponding teaching license outside the state of VT shall be considered equally.
- Have completed a minimum of 15 credits in each of the following content areas in order to serve as the instructor of record in these areas: English Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, and Math. We will consider individuals who hold 15 credits in at least two of these areas and are willing and able to obtain the necessary credits in the other areas within two years.
- Master's degree or equivalent in Special Education or other appropriate discipline plus 3 to 4 years of relevant experience preferred (or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired).
- Working knowledge of Vermont Special Education Law and/or recent experience working in a Vermont school district preferred.
- Experience working in a psycho-educational environment understanding social/emotional functioning in a public school setting required.
-Knowledge of and experience with social skills instruction and social communication strategies and instruction.
-The ability to adapt the level of content while still encouraging higher level and critical thinking.
- Previous experience with specialized alternative education programs, including collaboration with community service providers desirable.
- Ability to implement a focus of literacy across the content areas, and expertise in utilizing technology to support instruction
- Knowledge and/or experience using "backwards design" for lesson development, differentiated instruction to support all students, and formative assessment to provide student feedback and to adjust lesson delivery.
- Dedication to providing a safe and respectful learning environment for students.
- Excellent teaching, organizational, planning, written and oral communication, and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to the success of ALL students, and ability to understand and teach to the various learning styles of students.
- The ability to effectively engage students.
- Commitment to continuous improvement in the areas of knowledge and professional practice.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the student population being served and how demographic variables impact student achievement, and effectively uses this knowledge to effectively design and delivery instruction.

For column placement on the salary schedule we consider credits earned after the date of your degree (bachelor's or master's) in which you received a grade of B or better. For step placement, we grant one step for every year of previous public school teaching experience for the first five years, then one step for every two years of public school teaching experience thereafter. We also consider directly related industry experience (e.g., private school, college) by granting one step for every two years of full-time experience in most cases.
