Job Details

The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District is located in the hamlet of Oyster Bay, a sailing community that is the home and resting place of our 26th President Theodore Roosevelt. Among its residents are many multi-generational graduates who feel a deep sense of community and take great pride in the area’s history and traditions. Oyster Bay-East Norwich is a small educational community that has always served a diverse student body.

Enrollment has been consistent, currently 1533 students, who attend three schools: Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School (Pre-K-Grade 2), James H. Vernon School (Grades 3-6) and Oyster Bay High School (Grades 7-12). The District's 13.1 square-mile boundaries include the hamlets of Oyster Bay and East Norwich and the incorporated villages of Centre Island, Oyster Bay Cove, Cove Neck, and portions of Mill Neck, Muttontown, Laurel Hollow, and Upper Brookville.

With a commitment to excellence, the District offers a strong instructional program that embraces all levels of ability in the student population while maintaining one of the lowest student-teacher ratios on Long Island. The professional staff is committed to educating the whole child, with emphasis on individual instruction, enabling teachers to recognize students' strengths and weaknesses, capitalize on their learning styles, identify each child's gifts and talents, and address their social and emotional needs.

The classroom curriculum is underpinned by advancements in instructional technology, the full implementation of a 1:1 technology initiative, vast honors, college and Advanced Placement offerings, a unique approach to college preparation and planning, and an increase in STEM opportunities that foster experimentation, analysis and inquiry.  The District is committed to the continual improvement of its instructional program that is progressive, rigorous and relevant, and prides itself on the relationships that defines a learning community.

The fine and performing arts, as well as our athletic programs and co-curricular activities, play very important roles in the schools.  The District is proud of the high percentage of students who take part in multiple opportunities to enhance their education. The facilities are well maintained, with numerous enhancements to support students’ success within and beyond the classroom.  The District completed a state-of-the art and music wing expansion last year through a community supported bond. Equally important to the community was the commitment to maintain the architectural integrity of a building from 1929. This past year the community supported a capital project to develop a sports complex and universal busing for grades K to 6.

With the support of the Board of Education and the community, the District is devoted to working together to bring the best quality education to its students and to ensure their success as the communicators, collaborators, critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and leaders of tomorrow.

Financially, the District has a Moody's bond rating of Aa1, one of the highest ratings a school district can earn for financial strength. School budgets are consistently supported by the community. Although COVID 19 has many economic challenges, the District is almost exclusively financed with local tax dollars. Capital assets as well as PPE and other safety equipment purchases have been enthusiastically supported by both the Board of Education and the community.  The community, teachers, administration, and Board of Education support and look forward to the safe return of students to the classroom.

The Board of Education, community and students are committed to the continual development of educational programs to meet the needs of 21st century learners and look forward to the opportunity to work with a Superintendent that will lead the way.

The Superintendent salary will be competitive with the top districts on Long Island.  Interviews will start in October with a start date beginning January 1, 2021 or as soon thereafter as possible.
