The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every school and every neighborhood, has access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school and college.

The Office of Student Health and Wellness aims to remove health-related barriers to learning such that students may succeed in college, career and life.

The Children and Family Benefits Unit (CFBU) Coordinator is responsible for conducting education and outreach as well as providing application assistance to enroll CPS students and their families into the All Kids/Medicaid and SNAP programs. CFBU Coordinators are also responsible for educating families about their rights, eligibility and the renewal process for public benefits. They will serve as a liaison with governmental agencies, schools and CPS to ensure students who are eligible are receiving the public benefits for which they are entitled, and are optimizing their benefits to protect their health.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Completes a minimum of 35 applications per month for the All Kids, Medicaid and SNAP programs.

  • Complies with guidelines and expectations outlined in the CFBU Policies and Procedures Manual.

  • Successfully completes income support training courses on an annual basis.

  • Educates families about their rights, eligibility and the renewal process by connecting with them in organized parent events.

  • Provides case management for recipients of income supports to ensure their sustained receipt of benefits.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with CPS principals, clinicians, parent advocates and administrative staff, in collaboration with CFBU Project Managers.

  • Cultivates and maintains partnerships with community-based organizations and state agencies at the local level such as the Illinois Department Healthcare and Family Services and the Illinois Department of Human Services.

  • Plans and provides ongoing aggressive school-based and community-based outreach to educate and enroll families in the All Kids, Medicaid and SNAP programs.

  • Enters daily activity for management to generate weekly and monthly reports, which includes: documentation on daily schedules, a record of interactions with families, logging of all case management interactions with IDHS, and documentation of district wide outreach activities/events.

  • Attends staff meetings and professional development.

  • Responds to and completes tasks relevant to CFBU business processes per the request of management, such as covering hotline response during periods of high volume.



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the CFBU Coordinator must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required :

  • Associate's degree or commensurate experience required; Bachelor's or Master's degree preferred.



Type of Experience and Number of Years :

  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a school setting or with public benefits programs.

  • Background in All Kids, Medicaid and the SNAP programs.

  • Experience working consultatively and collaboratively with a team of professionals.

  • Experience managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license, reliable vehicle and be willing to travel locally.

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from parents and school staff in personal interactions and group settings.

  • Proficient in using a range of technology and tools, including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office and Google.

  • Able to adapt in a fast-paced and evolving environment.

  • Able to work independently as well as to function effectively and collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively multi-task.



Additional Notes :

  • CPS employees are required to be actual residents of the City of Chicago within six months of beginning employment, and are required to maintain Chicago residency through employment.
