JOB GOAL
Provide instruction to students of low incidence population with significant cognitive disabilities to develop domestic, vocational, and recreational/leisure, community and self-determination skills. Provide students receiving special education services with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
• Special Education certification
• Meet Texas “highly qualified" standards for the grade levels and content / subjects taught.
• Minimum 1-year experience as a special education teacher
• 3 or more years of experience in life skills setting is preferred

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach special education life skills class es
• Utilize and implement special education programming adopted by Harmony Public Schools
• Develop and implement Community Based Instruction appropriate to grade level
• Collect data to determine student's strengths and weaknesses
• Collect data in order to develop student's standards-based IEPs
• Collect data in order to measure student's progress on IEPs
• Collaborate with parents, teachers and other relevant staff members in developing and implementing interventions
• Modify the curriculum utilized by HPS based on the individual needs of each student
• Assist general education teachers in implementing a modified curriculum
• Develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans for students with behavior that interferes with learni ng
• Provide case management duties for assigned students
• Take CPI certification class or approved equivalent in order to implement de-escalation techniques and legal restraint procedures during crisis situations
• Attend ARD meetings for assigned students
• Prepare ARD paperwork for assigned students
• Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning
• Develop lesson plans as instructed by supervisor
• Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
• Implement, both by instruction and action, Harmony's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives
• Provide grades to students in accordance with Harmony policy
• Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect the students, equipment, materials, and facilities

• Implement appropriate and effective behavior management in the classroom and at assigned duties
• Plan and supervise purposeful assignment s for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s)
• Provide constructive feedback to teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) in cooperation with campus administration
• Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees
• Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations
• Participate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment
• Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and coworkers
• Effectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents
• Perform other special education teacher duties when applicable
• Perform other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Ability to work well under pressure.
• Ability to lead a team of people for purposes of developing effective teaching strategies for students with disabilities.
• Knowledge of special needs students.
• Knowledge of special education laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
• Ability to use computer including software, database used by the district, spreadsheet and word processing software, calculator, copy machine and telephone.
• Ability to analyze data
• Ability to use effective interview techniques, effective public speaking skills, and problem-solving skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• There may be special requirements for working with assigned students including lifting and positioning students, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
• Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required.
• Position is in classroom setting and requires intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing.
• Moderate travel may be required.
