General Description

Provides classroom support to teachers in special education classes and general education teachers for inclusive settings developed through the Individualized Education Program (IEP). Communicates with students using sign language Performs daily activities using specific materials/methods and/or material modifications designed by the special education teacher and support personnel (speech, OT/PT, etc.). Performs routine clerical and instructional assignments within established procedures and standard practices. Tasks performed are outlined in oral and written instructions; employee has limited control over work assignments. Contacts are made within and outside the department; may require handling of sensitive information or dealing tactfully with others. Some judgment is required

Essential Job Functions

  • Implements academic instruction assigned by a teacher for individuals or small groups for the purpose of meeting instructional goals, as described by an IEP and/or district benchmarks.
  • Communicates with students using sign language.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the teacher.
  • Performs record keeping (daily data on instruction and/or behavior) under the direction of the teacher for the purpose of supporting the teacher and/or administrator in providing necessary records/materials.
  • Performs routine clerical tasks as assigned; operates copy machines; assembles materials for classroom projects; files classroom, student, instructional and program materials and may perform incidental typing tasks.
  • Assists special education students requiring daily care (e.g. toileting, diapering, feeding, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care and/or developing children's daily living activities and behavioral skills under the guidance of appropriate personnel (PT, OT, SLP, teacher) as assigned.
  • Assists the teacher with crisis problems and behavior management. Implements behavioral plans under the direction of the teacher and assists the teacher in observing, recording and charting behavior.
  • Assists the teacher in establishing and maintaining a clean, safe and cooperative classroom and learning environment.
  • Monitors and assists students in variety of school settings such as classroom, rest room, library, lunch, playground activities, community outings, vocational sites and in the absence of the teacher for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of assigned students.
  • Works with audio-visual equipment, computers and/or assistive technology as related to IEP/accommodations & modifications.
  • Assists lifting of students in and out of wheelchairs, braces and other orthopedic equipment; assists in physically transferring/lifting students to and from their wheelchairs for busing, school and/or community activities under the guidance of appropriate school personnel.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records and classroom information in accordance with legal requirements and policies.
  • Under direct or indirect supervision of school nurse, may provide routine and/or backup physical health care and assistance to a student such as tube feeding, suctioning, proper positioning of students in specialized equipment, etc.
  • Administers first aid and prescription medications to special education students for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with district, state and federal requirements.
  • Serves as an aide on the school bus as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques and clerical procedures; of general academic subjects sufficient to teach others. Some knowledge of deafness (language and culture) and of interpretation methodologies and related federal guidelines. Demonstrated ability to supervise children in the absence of a supervisor; to perform basic clerical tasks, communicate effectively orally and in writing and follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff and parents in a professional manner. Demonstrated ability to use sign language.

Requirements

Ability to communicate using American Sign Language is required. VQAS I or equivalent education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Qualifications of “Highly Qualified” under No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is PREFERRED.
These qualifications are:

• passing score of 455 on the ParaProfessional Assessment, or

• possession of a minimum of 48 college credits or

• possession of an Associate’s Degree.
"Highly Qualified" requirements will be met upon hiring
