Purpose StatementThe Springfield, Missouri Public School District is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Behavioral Technician Specialist, Special Education.

The Springfield School District is Missouri's largest public school district and has built a reputation of academic excellence based on the outstanding performance of our students and schools. About 25,000 students attend 36 elementary schools, an intermediate school, 9 middle schools, 5 high schools and a variety of alternative education and choice programs.

The Behavioral Technician Specialist will provide support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting students in reaching targeted behavior goals and social competencies; assisting in the instruction of individual or small groups of students in a variety of subject areas; and monitoring and reporting student behavior.

Essential FunctionsDirectly assists students and teachers by collecting/analyzing data, providing identified reinforcements and/or consequences and implementing other components of behavior plans for the purpose of achieving targeted behavioral goals.

Works with students to increase social competencies for the purpose of making improvements in relational skills.

Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, trainings, for the purpose of receiving and conveying information.

Communicates with teachers regarding assigned student's progress for the purpose of participating in needs assessments and/or assisting in evaluating progress regarding behavior support.

Documents observations of student performance in academic and school activities (e.g. social skills, behavior, assignments, ) for the purpose of providing written records and/or complying with mandated requirements.

Provides assistance by utilizing behavior reduction strategies and performing approved physical intervention techniques, when required, for the purpose of ensuring student

Performs other duties, as directed by the Principal or supervising teacher (e.g. behavioral, social, instructional) for the purpose of facilitating success for students.

Maintains a variety of manual and electronic instructional files and records for the purpose of providing written reference and meeting mandated reporting.

Reports health and safety issues to instructional personnel, administrative personnel and/or appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, inappropriate social behaviors) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.

Supports students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, field trips, dances, sporting events, school grounds, assemblies, library, computer lab) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.

Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in the school environment and community for the purpose of ensuring students success.

Other Functions

Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements (Minimum Qualifications)Knowledge is required to perform instructional procedures and practices. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: appropriate codes, policies, regulations and/or laws; age appropriate activities; safety practices and procedures; conflict resolution; stages of child development; and behavioral management strategies.

Skills are required to perform multiple highly complex, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings and/or events; gather, collate and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: developing and maintaining positive relationships with all stakeholders; setting high expectations for self and others; setting and monitoring progress toward goals; applying critical thinking/problem solving to improve work processes; applying behavior modification techniques developed for classroom use according to approved policies and procedures; intervening positively and diffusing potential confrontations among students; writing observations and document student behavior; communicating effectively orally and in writing with children and adults; and maintaining confidentiality.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance

In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all schedules hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.

Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employee's supervisor or building administrator.

All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Springfield School District and is appropriate for their position.

ResponsibilityResponsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Terms of Employment

The terms of employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment in a Missouri public school and Board of Education policy, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by Collective Bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between SPS and that Collective Bargaining representative.

Work Environment & Physical RequirementsThe usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 20% sitting, 20% walking and 60% standing. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
