Job Details

Facilitates communication between the hearing impaired students and instructors, other students and staff.

  • Facilitates communication between students with hearing impairments, staff and students with sign language.
  • Interprets and transliterates in mainstream classrooms during lectures, discussions, public address announcements and any other time spoken language and/or sign language is necessary;
  • Determines appropriate interpretation/transliteration of the spoken language;

    • Interprets/transliterates during any school activity attended by the student with a hearing impairment including extra-curricular activities approved by the supervisor;
    • Provides language and social modeling to assigned learner(s) through completion of classroom activities, interactive conversation and play with others;
    • Provides supplemental tutoring and/or other instructionally relevant activities as requested and/or required to assist learner (s) to develop necessary skills under supervision of the teacher of the D/HH;
    • Supports secondary learners(s) who participate in work experience activities at school, community or other work settings.
  • Maintains the environment and provides information to assist staff to support hearing impaired students.

    • Under the direction of the Teacher of the D/HH, checks equipment daily prior to classes, e.g., hearing aids, auditory trainers, FM systems;
    • Establishes physical setting in conjunction with the classroom teacher and teacher of the D/HH to optimize communication interaction;
    • Prepares for interpreting/transliterating through study of current lesson plans, outlines, discussions, etc.; determines appropriate material for study.
    • Provides information to the mainstream teacher, Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing and other pertinent staff regarding the communication needs of the students and how to maximize the benefits of interpreting;
    • Provides support to students and staff regarding the use of the interpreter. (e.g. team philosophy, education teachers, etc.).
