PreK-12 Equity and Inclusion Specialist

In the Farmington Public Schools, Equity Matters. We recognize that students come to us with diverse experiences, interests, strengths, and needs. FPS Community Council on Equity and Inclusion: As a next step in the district's focus on anti-racism, social justice and equity, we will be establishing a district-wide Community Council on Equity and Inclusion for the fall of 2020. The council will include students, parents, and faculty representatives, as well as outside experts, to engage in an ongoing dialogue about dismantling systemic racism and working toward school communities with inclusion, social justice and equity goals at the center of school improvement work. Each school has an established equity-focused team, and these groups will now work in partnership with the district-level Community Council.

  • Hold or be eligible for CT State Teaching Certification
  • Hold a Bachelor's Degree in Human Rights, Education, Ethnic Studies, Sociology or other related areas
  • Recent and relevant experience implementing successful equity-related initiatives
  • Demonstrate excellent communication, writing and interpersonal skills
  • References indicating a high degree of personal responsibility, a learner orientation, and a relationship-focused approach to leadership
  • Consideration will be given to the following:
    • Training in Restorative Justice practices, RULER, Family Engagement
    • Various life/work experiences that contribute to the candidate's overall preparedness.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, and Human Resources

SALARY: Teacher salary plus Resource Teacher stipend which requires 2 additional work days beyond the teacher's contract, appointment renewed annually

WORK SCHEDULE: School year plus two additional days

The Equity and Inclusion Specialist will serve as a champion for anti-racism, equity, social justice and inclusion within the Farmington Public Schools and school community. This individual will work directly with classroom teachers to build capacity to facilitate anti-racist, anti-bias conversations with students at every level and to support a restorative approach to discipline practices. The district is committed to the development of social and emotional learning using the RULER approach with faculty and students, and this individual will assist in deepening understanding of the integration of Equity and SEL into instructional practices. As a classroom coach with expertise in facilitating social justice initiatives, the Equity and Inclusion Specialist will join a team of other content area specialists to bring an equity lens to all systems of the organization.

  • Support the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction and Human Resources in leading the district-wide FPS Community Council on Equity and Inclusion
  • Work directly with central office administrators, school leaders, Family Support Liaisons at each school to communicate a clear vision, support students, and articulate strategic improvement efforts in the areas of social justice, anti-racism, equity and inclusion PreK-12 as aligned to the district Equity Framework
  • Work on a systems-level to promote inclusion and equity in the areas of professional learning, recruitment, teaching and learning, culture and climate, curriculum development and communications
  • Work directly with school-based student-led Equity Leadership Groups to promote student voice and agency
  • Promote current work in culturally responsive classrooms, restorative practices, RULER and our work with partner organizations to promote inclusivity, social justice and anti-racism
  • Facilitate data-driven decision making to boldly address gaps and barriers to opportunity, readiness, or achievement
  • Develop and monitor improvement goals and collect evidence of success
  • Work directly with families and school-based Family Support Liaisons to ensure all students feel a strong belonging to the academic community
