The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every childin every school and every neighborhoodhas access to a world-class learning experience from birth, resulting in graduation from high school, college and career-ready.

Within the Office of Diverse Learners Supports and Services, the Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) Implementation Coach will focus on individual and group embedded professional learning that will expand and refine the understanding about researched-based effective instruction. The Implementation Coach will collaborate with the school staff to design instruction to meet the needs of students who use AAC. This position will ensure that students who use AAC are provided appropriate support for learning.

The AAC Implementation Coach will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of school teams for AAC students that have been referred. Assess and recommend appropriate AAC support through resources, tools, mentoring, and coaching

  • Collaborate with the IEP team and all school-based educators for students that require additional support

  • Provide individual, small, and/or large group trainings for stakeholders (i.e. CPS school staff, parents and students) on AAC hardware and software

  • Provide on-site training/consultations/coaching to assist schools with implementation

  • Identify and track progress of school teams that need additional support

  • Attend professional development to increase individual knowledge of AAC devices and/or implementation best practices

  • Facilitate the professional and intellectual development of teachers, related service providers, and paraprofessionals

  • Communicate, implement, and demonstrate practices in instruction that are known to improve support for students with AAC



In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the AAC Implementation Coach must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required :

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Certification in Education preferred

  • Master's degree preferred



Type of Experience and Number of Years :

  • 5 years educational experience working with students with disabilities preferred;

  • 3 years experience providing professional learning & training to adults;

  • Experience with instructional coaching



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Familiar with the principals and strategies of instructional coaching.

  • Knowledgeable of AAC best practices, assistive devices, computer hardware, software applications, vendors, etc. to become a knowledgeable resource on assistive technology devices and services for CPS stakeholders.

  • Experience coaching, leading and supporting teachers

  • Extensive experience in developing and delivering professional training

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, school staff, associates, students, parents, community agencies, and employers

  • Able to establish and maintain data tracking systems and utilize various software programs for project and program efficiency

  • Knowledge of partnership learning and coaching techniques



City of Chicago Residency:

All employees of Chicago Public Schools are required to live within the City of Chicago. New applicants have 6 months to establish and maintain residency within the City or will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including immediate termination.
