The Office of Student Services (OSS) is responsible for providing a variety of supports and services to students in Cambridge Public Schools (CPS). Our programs are dedicated to ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and students who have advanced learning needs. The Office of Student Services is comprised of special education, 504 services and the office of advanced learning.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to established rules, regulations, laws and appropriate ethical standards when conducting Physical Therapy screenings and evaluations.
  • Administer formal and informal assessments including observing students in educational environments, selecting appropriate assessments based on individual student needs, and administering assessments according to acceptable procedures.
  • Analyze and interpret information to make recommendations regarding the need for physical therapy services in the school based setting by integrating data from a variety of assessment techniques and sources including but not limited to skilled observation, checklists, parent interview, functional, and standardized assessments.
  • Synthesize evaluation results into a comprehensive written report that reflects strengths and barriers to student participation in the educational environment in language that is clear and easily understood, and that meet state requirements.
  • Collect data for IEP planning, decision making and progress monitoring.
  • Complete logging of services for third party reimbursement accurately and in a timely manner as appropriate.
  • Maintain easily accessible and accurate files and safeguard confidentiality of student records.
  • Schedule direct services using a variety of service delivery models, including classroom intervention, consultation/collaboration and out of the classroom as appropriate to meet student needs in the least restrictive environment.
  • Provide targeted, evidence-based therapeutic intervention to facilitate student participation and physical access within the school environment. Modify therapeutic instructional approaches as needed.
  • Monitor and reassess the effects of specific physical therapy intervention and the need to continue, modify, or discontinue services
  • Adapt and modify environments, equipment, and materials.
  • Train instructional staff and parents as needed to meet individual needs and to help students function as independently as possible.
  • Collaborate with school personnel, including teachers, administrators, and other related service providers to support and best meet the needs of all students.
  • Provide information to school personnel about physical and gross motor disorders as they relate to access of the school environment and general education curriculum.
  • Use appropriate therapy materials to meet the needs, age, cultural differences and interests of individual students and arranges therapy environment to create optimum learning conditions.
  • Attend Team meetings and parent-teacher conferences.
  • Develop appropriate IEPs and/or 504 Plans based on students' strengths & needs and demonstrates awareness of professional performance in due process matters and litigious environments.
  • Chair team meetings and participate collaboratively with multi-disciplinary educational teams to develop Individualized Education programs (IEPs), write measurable goals and objectives, and complete all required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Participate in professional meetings and workshops directly related to Physical Therapy
  • Any related duties as outlined by the Assistant Superintendent, Special Education Director and/or Coordinator of the Office of Student Services.
Your Skill Set:
As the incoming Physical Therapist you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited Physical Therapy program.
  • Registered Physical Therapist.
  • Massachusetts License or the ability to obtain Massachusetts licensure in Physical Therapy.
  • Experience working in a pediatric setting/with children with special needs is preferred, though not required.
