Job Summary
The School Counseling Coordinator provides support in the development and implementation of school counseling programs based upon the identified needs of students in individual schools and in the district, contributing their subject matter expertise in strategy development, data collection, and professional development for ASD school counselors. The coordinator's role will involve extensive collaboration and coordination with a large number of internal and external groups. The coordinator is not a supervisory position and reports directly to the Senior Director of Secondary Education. This position requires a valid Alaska administrative or speciali services certificate and has a retirement association with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS).

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A master's degree in school counseling or a closely related field.A valid Alaska type B administrative or type C special services certificate by start date.Three years of experience in public education as a school counselor and/or administrator.

The following are preferred:
  1. Experience in change process, effective school practice, program development, and providing professional development.Ability to research, collect data, and organize best practices in school counseling for program development and improvement.Ability to facilitate groups and effectively present information to administrators, business and industry, the public, and other stakeholders in the Anchorage School District.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Provides coaching and support for school counselors to strengthen their school-wide program development processes, comprehensive school counseling program alignment with school needs, and the identification of developmentally appropriate services.Collaborates in the integration of school counseling programs with the total educational curriculum of the school, district, and/or state.Develops, implements, and coordinates needs assessments and evaluations related to current counseling practices and implementation of a comprehensive school counseling program, identifying key strategies, elements, and tools for best practices.Maintains knowledge of current research-based strategies.Communicates regularly with school and district stakeholders to advocate for school counselors and enhance school counseling services.Conducts regular meetings with counselor groups and others to disseminate information and discuss best practices.Collaborates in the coordination, development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation and improvement of professional development activities for school counselors.Collaborates in the development and delivery of a new counselor mentoring program.Visits school counselors to support and coach as needed.Improves and maintains website for district counseling staff and their customers.Regularly attends and actively participates at ASD committee meetings.Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
