ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY (AT) SPECIALIST

SUMMARY DISCRIPTION

An AT Specialist assists IEP teams in consideration of student AT needs and facilitates decision making about AT solutions. The specialist provides assistive technology devices, services, training and resources that enable students with disabilities to access the curriculum and complete educational tasks they could not otherwise complete. The specialist seeks to improve participation, productivity, and independence of students. The incumbent performs other related duties as required.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

AT Specialist Job responsibilities include:
  • Support IEP teams in evaluation of student assistive technology needs.
  • Assist in decision-making regarding the purchase, lease, or other means of acquiring assistive technology devices.
  • Assist in selecting, designing, fitting, customizing, adapting, applying, maintaining, repairing, or replacing assistive technology devices.
  • Coordinating with other professionals, interventions, or services.
  • Providing training or technical assistance for students, families, teachers, therapists, or other school staff regarding assistive technology devices or services.

  • EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

    Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge and skills in qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and experience would be:
  • A Bachelor's Degree or in Special Education or related service (e.g., speech pathology, OT); Master's Degree Preferred.

  • AND
  • Three years of classroom experience (K-12) teaching, coaching/facilitation experience. Must demonstrate evidence of leadership and involvement in the area of Special Education.

  • Knowledge of/Skill at:
    • Knowledge of a wide variety of disabilities and conditions of students who may require AT, including students with complex needs
    • Familiarity with specially designed instruction, curriculum adaptations, and positive behavior supports for students with complex needs
    • Knowledge of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) teaching methodologies and devices
    • Technology competency and troubleshooting skills with variety of AT supports including but not limited to computers, iOS devices, communication devices, and alternative access methods
    • Special Education/AT laws and regulations
    • Assistive Technology product knowledge, and related laws and regulations.
    • Willingness and dedication to learn new information
    • Ability to design custom AT supports
    • Ability to establish rapport quickly with a variety of students with complex needs in their customary environments
    • Develop and maintain rapport and effective relationships with both students and adults contacted in the course of work by using courtesy, diplomacy, collaboration, cooperation, support, and professional conduct
    • Ability to train students, staff, and parents effectively to use AT supports
    • Contribute to the goals and success of the AT team through collaboration, cooperation, flexibility, and shared decision making
    • Deliver quality professional development in small and large groups
    • Demonstrate professional writing skills
    • Knowledge of resources from State and local agencies.

    Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada teaching certificate.

    Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

    Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

    Additional Job Information :

    The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee.

    New employees will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting.

    Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance benefits. Benefits are paid by employees at a prorated percent for those working less than full time.
