About the Position

At Whittle School & Studios, the School Nurse supports the learning experience of our day and boarding students by developing and implementing health-related policies and procedures in alignment with our mission and vision. This professional in this position is responsible for implementing and overseeing practices and procedures to ensure the promotion of a healthy school environment in compliance with federal and local laws. Reporting to the Director of Safety and Security, the School Nurse consults with and provides advice to the Division Heads, School Counselor, Director of Residential Life, teachers and other staff regarding students' specific health issues. A member of both the Student Support Team and the School Safety team, the School Nurse works closely with senior administrators regarding health and safety issues as they relate to the School and directs the activities of the Health Office. In addition, our School Nurse has the following responsibilities:
  • Ensure safety of students and employees by promoting effective health practices
  • Assess and provide appropriate care to ill and injured students, faculty and staff
  • Receive students in the health center for care and document health office visits
  • Develop, implement and evaluate of health center operations
  • Communicate with parents and employees about students' illnesses or injuries
  • Ensurenursing practice, quality and regulatory standards are upheld
  • Order and maintain medical supplies and medications
  • Coordinate care with local public health departments, medical providers and school counselor, including arrangement of medical appointments with local health-service providers for the treatment of boarding students, as needed
  • Communicate with relevant public health departments to prevent or control communicable disease
  • Administer prescription and over-the-counter medication as necessary
  • Help maintain documentation of all health and immunization records, of all students, through Magnus Health Tracker software before and during the school year
  • Act in loco parentis for all boarding students requiring off-site medical evaluation and treatment
  • Provide ongoing health information to students, parents and school personnel
  • Serve as health matter expert when developing/revising school health policies (i.e. food allergies)
  • Manage daily COVID-19 symptom checks for all students, faculty and staff
  • Facilitate testing, tracking and temporary quarantine of students suspected of COVID-19 or other infectious diseases until the student is safely removed from campus
  • Coordinate with the Director of Residential Life/Dean of Students to facilitate transportation of boarding students to medical appointments

The following are highly desirable qualifications and/or requirements for the listed position:

Content and Education Expertise
  • Bachelor's in Nursing with current RN license
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience
  • CPR/First aid certified; must maintain current certification
  • School experience highly desired
  • Experience in adolescent health, pediatric medical and/or psychiatry preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially in interactions with children and adolescents
  • Ability to quickly and competently assess medical situations and escalate as needed; possess excellent decision-making skills
  • Work experience in a culturally diverse environment with international familiespreferred
  • Excellent verbal and written skills
