Job Summary
Position is responsible for implementing a comprehensive literacy program that requires teacher directed, computer-assisted, and small group instruction daily using an evidenced-based reading intervention program. The position engages in professional development during the year and communicates with administrators on individual student progress and growth in literacy. Position is responsible for analyzing program literacy data, adjusting, and planning for future literacy needs. Position is responsible for creating a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil's ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.
Essential Duties
  1. Facilitates 45-minute daily reading lessons using an evidenced-based reading intervention program.
  2. Assists administrators and teachers in selecting students that need additional support in literacy instruction.
  3. Collaborates with the reading specialist and school's literacy team to implement a support framework for student achievement in literacy and to review the reading progress of students.
  4. Collects and facilitates the review and use of school literacy data to guide instruction and plan for student needs.
  5. Demonstrates literacy lessons to teachers as appropriate.
  6. Observes literacy lessons of teachers with like positions to improve literacy instruction at the school/division, including planning for ongoing monitoring and support.
  7. Coordinates the literacy work of other reading staff in the building as applicable.
  8. Provides whole, individual, and small group instruction to meet the needs of students daily.
  9. Interprets the abilities and disabilities of students and works cooperatively with classroom teachers who have these students in classes.
  10. Utilizes on-line and other formative assessments to determine student's growth in the program.
  11. Completes reports, collects data, and provides information for program monitoring as requested.
  12. Conferences as requested with parents/guardians regarding the English reading and writing performance of students.
  13. Participates in professional development and engages with other teachers implementing the program.
  14. Organizes and maintains books, instructional materials, and instructional aids needed for the program.
  15. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

Other Duties:
  1. Attends staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
  2. Keeps abreast of developments, research, and new technology in the field.
  3. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school principal or other appropriate administrators.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
Must possess a Bachelor's degree and be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in English; a Reading Teacher or Specialists certification preferred. Must have completed at least three years of successful teaching experience in grade levels 6-8. Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills. Must possess knowledge of the needs of students requiring remedial reading instruction. Must possess an in-depth knowledge of instructional best practices in working with students who have deficits in reading. Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school colleagues, school administrators, parents and students.
