Program Coordinator, Peacemaker Elementary After-School Program

The Harlem Children's Zone Peacemaker program supports elementary and middle schools, offering a school success program during the school day and providing afterschool programs as well as summer programming. All of the programs are operated under the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene School Aged Childcare (SACC) as well as one DYCD location. The programs provide young people and their families with the support and services that enable them to have a vision of a productive future.

We are currently seeking an Elementary School Program Coordinator to provide effective leadership and support to advise and manage all programmatic components in organizational structure development, resource management, and curriculum development. The Program Coordinator is an integral part of the executive team and reports to the Assistant Program Director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Foster a professional, high quality program that serve as models both within and outside of the Peacemaker program
  • Work with Peacemaker participants to develop their artistic, educational, and leadership potential
  • Provide leadership, management, and analysis necessary to support all processes within the department
  • Coordinate all program components; visual arts, photography, performing arts, fashion, journalism, graphic design, video, dance, tutoring
  • Research and design curriculum for program with Teaching Artists and other staff
  • Organize and facilitate staff meetings and training/development workshops
  • Supervise the research and submission of youth work for distribution to festivals, workshops, media and community organizations, etc
  • Identify, maintain, and distribute relevant educational information and materials to interns through orientations, annual events, weekly meetings, and other appropriate avenues
  • Proactively assist with the development and implementation of student orientations, art showcases, exhibitions, staff development sessions, etc.
  • Plan program structure including dates of orientation, staff training, program curriculum development, and evaluations
  • Maintain records, including a database, spreadsheets, and files of all arts related programming
  • Collect and maintain program information (i.e. flyers, memos, curriculum, student, and unit information, etc)
  • Liaise and maintain relationships with program participants, media, educational, and community organizations - including colleges/universities and other external stakeholders
  • Research, plan, and execute youth opportunities (i.e. outreach to community organizations, media festivals, etc) to arrange opportunities for youth to distribute screen and discuss work
  • Identify opportunities for workshops
  • Represent Harlem Peacemakers and HCZ at conferences and youth networking events
  • Draft correspondence, prepare reports and proposals
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • A commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 3 years working in youth development; supervisory experience is preferred
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Outstanding organization and interpersonal skills is a must
  • Great attention to detail with the ability to work effectively on multiple projects
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able to work after-school hours (10:00 am - 6:00 pm)
  • Strong interest in empowering youth by adapting curriculum using the arts
  • Interest in alternative educational environments
  • Knowledge in the following a plus: Mac OSX, Adobe Suite, Final cut Studio, Pro Tools, Pro Logic, Reason, Digital Video & Music Production, Non Linear Editing and other applicable software
