Managing Director of Communications

We are seeking a Managing Director of Communications, who will design and support the execution of strategies to advance HCZ's communication, branding, and public relations priorities. Reporting to HCZ's CEO, this individual will serve as a member of HCZ's Senior Leadership Team.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage communications department team, including editorial and multimedia staff
  • Develop communications strategies targeting current and prospective staff, program participants, donors, Harlem residents and the general public
  • Cultivate opportunities for owned, shared, earned, and paid media coverage
  • Formulate responses to media inquiries
  • Leverage traditional and digital platforms to extend HCZ's reach by creating content that resonates with broader and farther-reaching audiences
  • Ensure all communications are consistent with HCZ's brand and organizational values
  • Develop, oversee, and manage the department budget including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting to ensure HCZ's financial success

Qualification, Skills and Knowledge Requirements
  • A commitment to the mission and values of HCZ
  • Bachelor's degree required and 10+ years of relevant experience preferred; or a combination of education and relevant experience
  • Ability to develop clear, targeted messaging tailored for different audiences and channels
  • Experience in media, public relations, and crisis communications
  • Ability to effectively develop strong cross-functional partnerships across internal and external teams
  • Demonstrated success as an effective manager who has successfully motivated staff to achieve and sustain excellence
