GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The Supervisor of Mathematics coordinates and provides leadership for development and implementation of curriculum, instruction and assessment in elementary, middle and high school mathematics. The supervisor provides leadership for delivery of professional development for administrators, coaches, teacher leaders, and classroom teachers. The supervisor monitors the implementation of the mathematics program through school visits, data analysis, and collaboration with other Providence School Department offices. The supervisor provides leadership in evaluation and selection of mathematics resources. The supervisor is responsible for increasing mathematics achievement across the district for all groups of students.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of the Deputy Superintendent of Academicswith latitude for the exercise of independent judgement in the performance of assignments. Work is subject to judgement in the performance of assignments. Work is subject to review based on results obtained and for conformance to laws, regulations, policies, rules and defined goals and objectives.

Plans, directs and coordinates the work of subordinate employees assigned to the : Supervisor of Mathematics

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
  • Leads the development and monitoring of implementation of the instructional program in math to address local and state mandates and priorities.

  • Plans and manages pilot tests of curricular and instructional improvements and disseminates information about successful practices. Participates in the development and pilot of new and revised district assessments.

  • Keeps abreast of research regarding program development. Reviews best practices, recent literature, and research studies and report. Evaluates findings and suggests changes or modifications to improve existing programs. Applies information/results of research and studies to instructional program.

  • Develops new curriculum and instructional units to support instructional program in school and achievement on the state and local assessment.

  • Plans and leads district meetings of math teachers.

  • Provides leadership in design and delivery of professional development training activities for principals, teachers and support staff to promote innovative teaching approaches and techniques. Provides support and guidance to in-service instructors and coordinators.

  • Work with specialists and school staff in monitoring and evaluating implementation of the math instructional program, advises principals, resource teachers, and classroom teachers regarding instructionally related concerns, problems, and or adjustments to new situations/curriculum.

  • Supervises the evaluation and selection of textbooks, instructional materials and equipment; coordinates articulation of curriculum between grade and school levels.

  • Develops proposals for outside funding support program improvements.

  • Collects data and prepares responses to request for information; interprets the curriculum and instructional program to the Board, staff, parents, and community; keeps abreast of latest research, developments, and techniques in math; maintains liaison with Rhode Island Department of Education, colleges and universities, appropriate professional organization, and other groups or individuals who influence the quality or direction of the instruction program.

  • Manages special district programs, including summer and/or extracurricular activities related to math; makes presentations to interested staff and community groups.

  • Prepares required report and annual budget request; manages expenditures and accounts for district activities; recommends allocation of grant funds according to need and best utilization; maintains files, records, and /or expenditure controls.

  • Collaborates with other districts offices and departments, community organizations, and institutions of higher education to develop integrated curricular units and assessments.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
  • Successful recent leadership experiences in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training; or other combinations of applicable education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

  • Experience in test development, curriculum development, and grant writing desirable.

  • Experience using instructional technology to support teaching and learning, curriculum development, staff training, and program and student accountability.

  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to change quickly and meet deadlines.

  • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative.

  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one's work.

  • Must have the knowledge and skills to build positive relationships with people from diverse populations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education:

Master's Degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in mathematics and/or coursework in curriculum, supervisory, and administrative coursework. Certification - Rhode Island Building Level Administrator Certificate and;

Experience:

5years of successful leadership experience (building leader/principal, assistant principal, and/or instructional coach).Significant K-12 urban leadership experience in assessing program needs, curriculum development, program implementation and staff training;

Or, any combinations of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

$103,625-$111,143
