QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.

  • Must have a master's degree in school counseling with experience or internship in the field.

  • English as a Second Language PreK-12 certification required.

  • Bilingual language skills (Spanish/English).

  • Dual endorsement in English as a Second Language and/or Special Education is preferred but not required.


JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is a 1.0 FTE located at Washington-Liberty High School. This professional will provide direct services to English Learners which include but are not limited to, individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention, family reunification, acculturation and trauma support. Students may be referred by teachers, administrators, school counselors, nurses, school staff, parents and/or self. The EL Counselor should be willing to collaborate with other professionals to ensure appropriate and meaningful support. This is a professional, full-time position. The salary is dependent upon level of education and experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizing and leading groups for students, either alone or as a co-leader with another professional experienced in group work. Presenting workshops and staff training to school personnel on topics related to acculturation, reunited families, and other socio-cultural aspects of learning and other related topics in response to staff needs.

  • Collaborating with teachers, guidance counselors, Bilingual Resource Assistants, and administrators on specific cases.


  • Acting as a resource to other professionals and paraprofessionals working with English Learners in the EL program, especially in drop-out prevention.


  • Maintaining close contact with community agencies in order to access services for the English Learners (e.g. Arlington Mental Health, Child Protective Services, Juvenile Courts, etc.)


  • Providing workshops in Spanish and classes to parents, adapting materials to the needs and language of this group.

  • Participating in team programming and conceptualization of new services as needs evolve.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience working with linguistically and culturally diverse student populations.


  • Strong skills in individual, group, and family counseling as demonstrated by training and professional experience.


  • Strong diagnostic and crisis intervention skills used to make appropriate referrals and intervention.


  • Familiarity with community and educational services for English Learners and their families.


  • Familiarity with the workings of a school system and the programs and services available to students.
