SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENT

Under general direction of the Director of Special Education, this position provides support to the Vision and/or Mobility Teacher with student instruction; adapting materials to student's reading mode (Braille and large print); assisting with Braille and adaptive equipment instructions as directed by teacher.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Adapts a variety of classroom materials (e.g., Braille, tactile materials, preparing audio tapes, etc.) for the purpose of implementing programming to meet the needs of students.
  • Assist in student instruction in the use of adaptive equipment (e.g., translation programs, screen readers, screen enlargement programs, CCTV, magnifiers, monocular, Voice Note, etc.).
  • Communicates with classroom staff and VI teacher closely on needs for students for the purpose of providing the best way to adapt curriculum to meet the academic needs of student/s.
  • Maintains files and/or records for the purpose of ensuring availability for required information.
  • Make large print reproduction of regular materials (e.g., scanning, enlarged, copies, etc.) for the purpose of providing instructional materials.
  • Monitors individual students for the purpose of providing assistance as needed and ensuring a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in program staff meetings (e.g., in-service, workshops, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or conveying information regarding visually impaired students.
  • Responds to inquiries for the purpose of providing information or referring to appropriate personnel.
  • Supports teacher with students (e.g., sighted guide, use of canes, reinforcing independent living skills, travel skills, etc.) for the purpose of providing orientation and mobility concepts.
  • Transcribes print materials using Perkins Braille writer (e.g., input into computer program, making tactile mathematic drawings/graphs, etc.) for the purpose of providing classroom materials for visually impaired student and providing Braille-to-print translation for non-Braille readers to work with students.
  • Travels between school sites for the purpose of working with district students (ages 3-21) with various vision needs and/or goals.
  • Work with Vision and/or O & M Teacher in assisting/teaching specialized equipment (e.g., braillist, keyboarding, electronic scanners, voice to, computer software, Braille embosser, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper and safe usage of equipment.
  • Performs other essential functions, as requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education and Experience

  • Braille Competency test required by the State of Washington

B. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic math, including calculations using fraction, percents, and/or rations; read a variety of manuals, rite document following prescribed formats.
  • Understand multi-step written and oral instructions
  • Specific knowledge based competencies required satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include: Braille (Literary and Nemeth) codes; Braille transcribing; office methods and practices; and concepts of grammar and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR
  • Ability to accurately and proficiently keyboard and utilize standard office software programs.
  • Ability to supervise elementary, middle, and high school students in large and small groups.
  • Ability to be entrusted with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to communicate and interact clearly, concisely, courteous and respectfully with students, parents, guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff with diverse multicultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Ability to be entrusted with confidential and sensitive information.

C. Certification and Licenses

  • Washington State Driver's license

  • First Aid and CPR Card

D. Desirable Qualification

  • Previous experience working with school-age children.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in both a typical school setting and satellite sites. During the normal work day employee may be required to travel to multiple sites throughout the district in all types of weather and maneuver traffic, steps, ramps, and uneven ground Must have normal use of fingers, hands, and arms; ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; and tolerance of occasional loud noises.
