This posting serves to collect an applicant pool for future Licensed Practical Nursepositions for the 2020-2021 school year. Positions may be full or part time. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted directly by someone from the hiring team when there are positions available.

SUMMARY
Under general supervision, Licensed Practical Nursesprovide basic public school nursing services in the examination and treatment of patients; as well as promote, maintainand restore good health at Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS) facilities.Incumbents provide nursing care to students and participate in the health program for the general school population; including students with physically handicapping conditions. Additionally, incumbents administer medications to students by nebulizer, gastrostomy tube, or rectal valium; maintain current files of student emergency cards; assist with vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening of students; assist with daily routine care of students who have a physical handicap; and perform lab work to test blood sugar.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Principal responsibilities may include:
  • Providinggeneral and special health counseling, patient care instructions, and treatment services to students and MPS staff, as well asresponding to emergencies in compliance with MPS policies and quality standards.
  • Supporting and enhancingthe patients' physical and emotional stability; explaining nature of illness, plan of care, procedures, and treatments to patient, family and significant others.
  • Performing nursing procedures, first aid, and prescribed medicines and medical treatments; observingand assessing patients' conditions and behavior; monitoring patients for adverse effects, and verifying patient safety and stability; reportingsignificant changes to supervisor or physician.
  • Interviewing and observingpatients to ascertain medical history and current condition; reviewing patients' records, takingvital signs, assessing current condition and pain level; administering medications as authorized; recording nursing notes on patient chart; and conferring and collaboratingwith other health care professionals to provide continuum of care.
  • Screening students for a variety of health care and environmental issues; tracking/evaluatinginfection control problems; and following-up with clients according to protocols.
  • Preparingcorrespondence, referrals, patient histories, and narrative nursing activity reports; updatingand maintaining a variety of files, records, charts and other documents; and maintaining appropriate records and preparingreports as required.
  • Following MPS nursing services protocols, procedures, and authorized written medical care plans.
  • Verifying and monitoring the health and safety of students and staff in the facilities.
  • Maintaining inventory of first aid supplies and equipment; and re-ordering supplies as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing AND two years of experience as a Certified Practical Nurse.
  • Certified Practical Nursing license with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, and the ability to maintain licesensure.
  • First Aid/CPR training.Additional health and safety training may be required.
  • Knowledge of:
    • State and Federal laws and regulatory issues governing public health, including rules and regulations of the Minnesota Department of Health and other governing agencies.
    • Modern nursing principles, techniques, and procedures for the care of patients.
    • Medical terminology, anatomy, physiology and concepts of disease.
    • Public health, safety protocols, and regional healthcare issues.
    • Nutrition and health maintenance issues for children and young adults.
    • Regional community service agencies and other governmental assistance programs.
    • Principles of record keeping, confidential records, and file management.
    • Customer service, public relations methods, and practices.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier material with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.

Final candidates may be invited to interview with a committee. Final appointment to this position will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.
