General Description
Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) is seeking individuals with a deep commitment to improving student achievement by providing remediation to struggling students in the areas of reading and/or math. The K-2 instructional assistant will use the "push-in" method to support students and K-2 teachers within the classroom setting. The K-2 instructional assistant will also use Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS), Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) and other diagnostic data to provide targeted, research-based strategies to improve literacy and numeracy skills of identified students. The K-2 instructional assistant will be responsible for working with the classroom teacher, Title I school based and district level staff to collect and analyze a variety of data sources to determine if intervention strategies are improving academic outcomes for students.

Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Requirement

"The applicant shall provide a transcript that specifies graduation from an accredited college with an associate's degree in early childhood education or closely related field of study preferred.
"Three to five years of experience working as an instructional assistant in a school setting is highly preferred.

Essential Job Functions

"Gathers and organizes instructional materials for students;
"Utilizes best practice instructional strategies and research-based intervention curriculum materials to meet the learning needs of identified students;
"Demonstrates a working knowledge and understanding of Standards of Learning (SOL) for reading, math, and school division curricular requirements;
"In collaboration with the classroom teacher, selects appropriate instructional materials to meet student needs;
"Works with the classroom teacher to analyze existing student achievement data and administers student assessments and monitoring instruments as needed to aid in progress monitoring of Title I students;
"Keeps all student information confidential;
"Maintains accurate student records and student progress data reports as required by Title I law and district policy;
"Attends professional development opportunities;
"Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with school personnel;
"Promotes an atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy and models professional, moral, and ethical standards as well as personal integrity in all interactions with co-workers, customers and clients;
"Follows district guidelines and policies.
"Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

"The Title I K-2 instructional assistant performs complex professional work that includes planning, coordinating, organizing and analyzing assessment data to provide "push-in" interventions and support in the areas of reading and math for identified students in a Title I school.
"Assessment data to be used to identify students should include: PALS, VKRP, SOL, SGA, GRA, benchmark, diagnostic and all other available school and district data.
"Work is performed under the general supervision of the building principal.
