We are hiring a Special Education Teacher who is fun, energetic, inspiring and nurturing of the students they teach, and who want to work with One City to help grow one of the most unique and transformational public schools in Wisconsin: One City Expeditionary Elementary School (OCEES). DEADLINE TO APPLY 

We are recruiting for 2020-21 school year. All new staff will attend two-days of orientation on Thursday, August 20 and Friday, August 21, and one week of professional development and school preparation during the week of August 24-28, 2020. New teachers will also attend select EL Education and Eureka Math training during the summer of 2020.

BACKGROUND ON ONE CITY SCHOOLS

One City Schools is a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization that provides high quality educational opportunities for young children. Our mission is to seed a new model of public education that ensures young children are on track to succeed in a college or career preparatory program from birth through high school graduation. Our vision is of a Greater Madison community where all children are prepared to contribute and succeed as adults. More importantly, we aim to partner with families and the broader community to cultivate children who become free, global and deep thinkers, curious learners, effective problem solvers, humanitarians, happy people and young people who care about the world around them.

One City Expeditionary Elementary School (OCEES) is an EL Education Network School, offering the highly regarded Expeditionary Learning curriculum in kindergarten and second grade (and eventually through grade 6). It is also a unique, two-generation public school, authorized by the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents, that provides a tuition-free education to children and works directly with families to ensure children are inspired, learning, growing and achieving to their full potential. OCEES is also the only public school in Wisconsin that offers both a longer school day (8:15am to 5:00pm) and longer school year (219 days vs 180 days in traditional public schools), including 90-minutes of co-curricular learning academies in Sports, Fitness, STEM, Girl Scouts, Boys to Men and Creative and Performing Arts.

We are also in the process of designing a brand new 75,000 square foot school facility for OCEES that will open in September 2021. It will include classrooms designed for project-based learning, a high school-sized gymnasium, student health center, parent room, calming/meditation rooms, a barber shop and hair salon, performing and visual arts studios, several maker spaces for STEAM learning, and Teacher Training and Instructional Practice Center, rooftop soccer field and outdoor place space.

SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER’S PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

One City’s Special Education Teachers oversee, inform and support the education and training of students with physical, emotional, cognitive, and learning disabilities. They design and deliver lessons geared towards the individual needs and capabilities of students under their supervision. They adapt classroom lessons and projects, and teach various subjects, such as reading, writing, and math, to students with mild and moderate disabilities. They also teach basic skills, such as literacy and communication techniques, to students who need it. Overall, they assure that all students receive a high quality and inspiring learning experience that helps them achieve to their full potential. They also provide a warm, nurturing, safe and loving environment where self-esteem is enhanced, independence encouraged, and individuality is respected. Specific performance responsibilities include:

  • Assesses students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop instructional plans
  • Adapts lessons and projects to meet the needs of students
  • Develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student
  • Plans, organizes, and assigns activities that are specific to each student’s abilities
  • Teaches, guides and mentors students as a class, in small groups, and one-on-one
  • Implements IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress
  • Updates IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals
  • Discusses student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and outside professionals as necessary and appropriate
  • Supervises and mentors teacher assistants who work with students with disabilities
  • Prepares and helps students transition from grade to grade and if they relocate or leave to attend another school
  • Monitors and supervises effective classroom and school-wide structures that promote active, student-driven learning and positive student behavior and safety
  • Maintains an orderly, academically-focused classroom environment and effective management of instructional materials and records;
  • Keeps current in knowledge and practice of the curriculum, child development and relevant theories of learning, and be willing to share their knowledge for continual improvement of One City’s educational program and curriculum.
  • Assists in on-going curriculum reviews, including offering feedback on school and program effectiveness.
  • Becomes acquainted with supplemental materials and services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
  • Builds and maintains positive and engaging relationships with parents/families and work cooperatively with them to strengthen the educational program for their children.
  • Utilizes effective practices for community building, including rituals and traditions that build a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment.
  • Utilizes authentic formative and summative assessments to gauge learning, guide instruction, and provide timely feedback to students;
  • Participates in regular and ongoing professional development efforts and working collaboratively with grade band/level planning to constantly improve professional practice;
  • Participate fully and positively in a staff culture and the relentless pursuit of our mission; and
  • Works cooperatively with grade level and the school team in all areas of instruction, assessment, documentation, parent/guardian involvement, and classroom management.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong commitment to the mission, vision, goals and objectives of One City, and to working to with young children from diverse racial/cultural populations and their families; experience working with diverse children preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in an approved program for Special Education, and experience working with young children.
  • Valid Wisconsin Educators License or willingness to become certified ASAP.
  • Minimum of two (2) years teaching experience preferred; urban teaching experience and teaching children from racial, ethnic and linguistically diverse backgrounds also preferred.
  • Ability to regularly and routinely lift and push at least 50 pounds.
  • Completion of a background check required.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Other duties as assigned
