Setting ambitious, but achievable, goals is one of the core principles of GLA’s academic model. As such, GLA adds one grade level per year, with two teachers per classroom. We are seeking high capacity, fiercely positive, growth oriented Teachers to help us achieve our goals for the 2020-2021 school year. We will enroll K-7 in 20-21 and have both Elementary and Middle School positions open, as well as Special Education roles. 

 

Job Description

A Great Lakes Academy Teacher will be a part of a team of game-changing teachers working to change the face of education on the Southeast Side of Chicago. Our Teachers take responsibility for the high academic achievement and character development of every child in his or her classroom.  Each classroom and grade consists of co-teachers who work collaboratively for student success. 

Job Outputs

  1. Demonstrates a classroom culture that is fiercely positive and devotes the majority of time to instruction rather than discipline
  2. Instills a joy of learning in students and works to develop motivated and self-monitoring learners with the skills to set, monitor and meet academic and SEL goals
  3. Employs previous experience, best practices, and creativity to connect with students to ensure student achievement on interim and state tests demonstrates an average of 85% mastery; student achievement on STEP averages 4 STEPs of growth per year; 90% of students meet or exceed NWEA growth goals
  4. Establishes relationships with students’ families, cultivating engaging, rigorous learning environments for our students in and out of the classroom
  5. Consistently models the BE GREAT Great Lakes Academy core values: Bravery, Endurance, Growth, Responsibility, Enthusiasm, Achievement, and Team
  6. Develops a strong relationship with, and contributes to the development of, fellow teachers; collaborates with all staff members across team, grade level and experience 

Job Responsibilities

  1. Writes and delivers lesson plans that are engaging and effective per student data
  2. Implements classroom instruction that supports the social-emotional growth of students
  3. Cultivates positive, collaborative relationships with families and consistent communication with families
  4. Assesses and evaluates student growth; action plans on class-wide, group-wide and individual basis in response to student data
  5. Creates a classroom culture that develops in students the BE GREAT core values and independent learning skills
  6. Participates and grows tremendously during annual four-week staff orientation and training
  7. Provides meaningful feedback to colleagues and collaborates and shares ideas and lessons with colleagues

Job Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree is required.
  2. Teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred, but not required
  3. Valid IL State Certification
  4. ESL Certification preferred, but not required
  5. Belief in and alignment with Great Lakes Academy’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable.
