The Role:
The Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools and provides senior level leadership and oversight of academic outcomes and the overall educational experiences of students in Cambridge's 12 Gr. Pre-K -5 elementary schools, which offer a variety of educational programs ranging from dual language immersion in Chinese, Spanish and Portuguese to a public Montessori school. This position also oversees the district's early childhood programs.

The Assistant Superintendent is a member of the district's Administrative Council and Superintendent's Cabinet. Major responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership coaching, guidance and supervision to Principals with emphasis on quality instruction, student engagement, social emotional learning and standards implementation.
  • Lead the development and implementation of processes for implementing change and improving student achievement so that all students succeed.
  • Oversee and monitor the implementation of School Improvement Plans, including goals related to academic outcomes, school climate and culture, and family partnership.
  • Lead Gr. Pre-K-5 budget planning and implementation of programs and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other senior level administrators to assist the Superintendent in meeting district goals and managing district operations.
  • Provide information and recommendations to the Superintendent and School Committee on matters relative to curriculum, instruction, staff development and professional learning, accountability, and other matters of general district concern.
  • Represent the Superintendent and the district in various community, civic groups, professional, partnership and state level meetings and initiatives, and lead committees/task forces with city, higher education, community and industry partners.
  • Hire, supervise and evaluate Principals and other direct reports.
  • Address and facilitate the development of effective solutions to issues and problems as they may arise, both short and long term.
  • Follow through on other duties as assigned or expected by the Superintendent.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Educational Leadership or related field required. Doctorate degree desirable. At least ten years previous experience in public education to include experience as a classroom teacher and as a Principal, or comparable experience, preferably in an urban school district. Possess or be able to gain Massachusetts DESE educator license in the area Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent.

Terms of Employment:
Salary: $160,161 - $172,597 plus generous benefits package.

Work Year: 12 months (260 days).

This position requires frequent evening and periodic weekend attendance at meetings and other work. Must be able to travel between multiple locations on a daily basis, and to periodically engage in regional and national travel.
