The first charter high school in Silicon Valley, Downtown College Prep (DCP) was founded in San Jose in 2000 with the belief that all students, regardless of background and prior academic achievement, can and should be prepared for college success.

Through our singular commitment to college success, we ensure our largely low-income Latino students and families are fully supported in the pursuit of a college degree. DCP has graduated over 1000 alumni and currently serves 1800 students in grades 5-12 on four campuses and 500 college-aged alumni. In fall of 2018, 93% of the Class of 2018 matriculated to college. 53% of DCP grads have completed college or are on track to complete college in six years compared to 9% of low-income students nationwide. About the Opportunity

DCP is seeking a counseling intern or trainee with an interest in working with middle or high school youth. We are looking for someone with a flexible schedule interested in 10-20 hours of direct counseling services per week. The position will begin as soon as possible and will run through the end of the year in June. This opportunity will give graduate students to earn credits towards their credentials.

MSW and PPS Internships are unpaid and contingent and limited to hours necessary for the completion of internship requirements for a PPS credential or completion of MSW requirements for degree.

Responsibilities:

Hours and Supervision:
  • Intern will follow hour requirements of their university or credentialing program.
  • DCP will provide a credentialed supervisors to oversee intern work. A minimum of one hour of supervision will be provided for each week in which the intern provides service. Additional administrative supervision is provided by onsite administrator.

General Responsibilities:
  • Individual counseling per student once a week or as determined by DCP. On average thirty to fifty (30 to 50) minutes per week per student is recommended.
  • Group counseling for students as determined by DCP. Each group is limited to eight students. On average sixty (60) minutes per week per group recommended.
  • Provide linkage and collaboration with community services and organizations for individual students and families as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain case records, documentation, reports, contracts and correspondence in a timely manner.
  • Consult with site leadership and staff in management of student support services as needed.
  • Make classroom observations as needed.
  • Respond to emergency student situations involving extreme emotional crisis in conjunction with their supervisor. Interns may not provide crisis level services without supervisor support.
  • Observe Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations where applicable and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requirements in work practices and consultations.
  • Participate in the preparation for and in IST/SST/IEP meetings if needed.
  • Uphold school district policies and regulations

Other duties as assigned in line with requirements for credential and/or university program.

Requirements:
  • Either 1) Participation in a Master's in Social Work degree program from an accredited college or university or equivalent in which internship hours are a degree requirement or 2) or possession of a Masters in Social Work degree with coursework providing eligibility for a PPS credential upon completion of internship hours.
  • Ability to perform short-term and/or long-term counseling, intervention plans and case management activities with children, preadolescent and adolescent clients and their families in a school setting; these activities include individual, family and /or group activities work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Passionate about supporting first generation college students and their families
  • Spanish speaking a plus but not required
  • Flexible, organized, problem solver, and comfortable working independently.
