Department Description:

The School Registered Nurse is licensed to provide professional nursing services to students located at one or multiple assigned Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) to strengthen the educational process thereby improving and protecting the health status of students. The School Registered Nurse provides expertise and oversight in the prevention of illness and early detection and correction of health problems; and is uniquely qualified in preventive health, health assessment, referral procedures, crisis intervention, school health electronic record data management, and emergency preparedness. The School Registered Nurse performs health screenings; serves as a liaison between school personnel, family, and community to advocate for a healthy school environment; and travels to and from local schools and homes of students during school hours, using their personal vehicle, and at times, in difficult driving conditions to meet the health needs of students when schools and offices are open.

This is a Local 2250 ACE/AFSCME Position - Pay Table 600 - Grade 10, Grade 12 or Grade 13

Hourly Range: $28.73 - $65.50 (external candidates may not be placed above Step 6 $37.75(Grade 10), $41.67(Grade 12) or $43.75(Grade 13) due to contractual requirements)

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Provides professional nursing services for students including first aid for injuries and care of ill students;
  • Maintains a safe and orderly environment in the school health room and on school property;
  • Identifies and assesses acute and/or chronic health problems of students, particularly as it relates to communicable diseases, chronic disorders and acute conditions;
  • Applies the nursing process in the assessment, development, and implementation of care plans that address the needs of students with health conditions in the school setting;
  • Documents students visits to the school health room including all injuries that occur on school property during the school day with the use of PGCPS - School Health Electronic Record (S.H.E.Re) system and Injury Reporting Forms as required by the Office of Risk Management;
  • Obtains physician's order for medications and/or treatment as necessary;
  • Administers and monitors medication as well as immunization as directed by a Maryland licensed physician or Nurse Practitioner;
  • Performs treatments and administers immunizations as prescribed by a Maryland licensed physician or nurse practitioner;
  • Provides individual teaching and support to students attempting to become independent in managing health related conditions;
  • Provides counseling and guidance and makes appropriate referrals for services needed by students with health related conditions;
  • Acts as a resource for health information for students, parents and/or guardians, and staff;
  • Performs health screenings in compliance with Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) and Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) laws and regulations, policies and procedures;
  • Maintains a current list of students with identified health conditions;
  • Informs Principals and teachers of health needs of individual students while maintaining student confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA);
  • Attends multidisciplinary school based meetings e.g., School Health and Wellness Action Team (S.W.A.T.), School Improvement Teams (S.I.T.), and School Based Immunization Compliance Team (I.C.P.);
  • Provides aggregate reports on the health of students in the school building as requested by the Principal and School Health and Wellness Action Team (S.W.A.T.) and Health and Wellness Action Team (H.A.T.) in close coordination, collaboration and communication with the Office of School Health Policy, Services, and Innovation (OSHPSI) leadership;
  • Initiates and maintains an electronic cumulative health folder (SR-5) for every student in accordance with nursing standards;
  • Reviews and maintains students electronic records of immunization in accordance with PGCPS Administrative Procedure 5161;
  • Verifies that accurate records of any delegated nursing duties to unlicensed staff remain on file with the school's administration and Nurse Manager;
  • Prepares reports for DHMH, MSDE, and OSHPSI in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) and OSHPSI policies and procedures ;
  • Coordinates closely with the designated school level lead of Prince George's County Health Department (PGCHD) and Nurse Manager in the reporting and management of reportable infectious disease investigations and outbreaks to ensure that OSHPSI Leadership team is provided verifiable and accurate information and data on a regular basis through the case investigation and disease outbreak;
  • Attends PGCPS professional development and in-service workshops;
  • Works closely with the School Budget Manager and Nurse Manager to maintain an adequate stock first aid equipment and medical supplies in the school health room;
  • Performs other related work as required.

  • Ability to enter data with accuracy into an electronic database system on a daily basis and ensure that all electronic student data is up-to-date, secure and kept confidential as audited by Nurse Managers.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Grade 10 - Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) and two years of pediatric nursing experience; or

    Grade 12 - Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and two years of pediatric nursing experience; or

    Grade 13 - Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with a Master's Degree in Nursing and two years of pediatric nursing experience.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Current Maryland Nursing License, First Aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) Certifications; and possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's Driving License.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Delegates nursing procedures to unlicensed school based personnel in accordance with the Maryland Nurse Practice Act.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee responds in emergency situations as a first responder to students, staff, and visitors in the school building including running down a hallway, up and down stairs, performing CPR, using a defibrillator and/or pushing or lifting up to 25-50 Ibs.
