Dear Friend,
Welcome to the Boston Public Schools!
America's first and oldest school district is also one of its most modern. We are the first major urban school district in the nation to connect all of our schools to the Internet. We are training our staff in new technologies for communication and are committed to using computers and the worldwide web as a new and exciting tool to enhance instruction.
Our website will give you a brief snapshot of our schools, such as Boston Latin, the oldest school in the nation; three state-of-the-art Early Education Centers; and the new Pilot Schools, a constellation of highly innovative in-district "charter schools" where new instructional practices are developed and shared throughout our system. The 145 schools you will learn about here are all very different, yet each one is committed to teaching all students so that they can meet rigorous citywide learning standards.
Boston is now engaged in an ambitious process of school reform. We have new curricula in every major subject, clearly defined outcomes for student achievement, a comprehensive plan for training all of our staff in new instructional approaches, and a tough but fair system to assess our results in terms that everyone in the community can understand.
Our goal is 145 schools of excellence - and as you will discover in this website, all of us associated with the Boston Public Schools are enthusiastic about our progress and are aware that much work remains to be done.
I hope you will share our sense of excitement and that you will enjoy your visit to the Boston Public Schools!
With warm regards,
Thomas W. Payzant
Superintendent of Schools
