Horizons National seeks to fill a key management position responsible for meeting national expansion goals of a rapidly growing and highly respected non-profit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap. The position is located in Norwalk, CT.
The core Horizons program is a transformative six-week summer academic enrichment session for low-income public school students on independent and post-secondary school campuses across the nation.
The Director of Expansion plays a critical leadership role in determining the growth trajectory and overall impact of Horizons nationally and within a growing number of regions. Central to this is creating strong and growing partnerships with independent, post-secondary, and public schools, innovating approaches to partnership, and identifying and managing the expansion to new sites around the country as we aspire to grow from 26 programs to 50 programs by 2016. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Expansion is a key member of the Horizons National management team, partnering closely with the Chief Program Officer and Chief Advancement Office.
The Ideal Candidate
The Director of Expansion must be passionate and articulate. Since a large portion of this job involves conversations both over the phone and in-person with heads of independent schools and presidents and deans of colleges, speaking eloquently and expressively is a must. The Director of Expansion must effectively convey to the heads of education institutions that Horizons programs not only transform the lives of underserved students, they bring many benefits to the host school’s students and institution. The Director of Expansion will also be an intuitive strategic thinker with the capacity to look at the big picture. Overall, the ideal candidate will have a good sense of humor combined with a powerful work ethic and a willingness to travel.
Strategic Growth: Lead the implementation of a comprehensive strategy to build an ever-growing network of private and public educational institutions. Manage the effectiveness of the expansion team, and foster continuous improvement and innovation through planning, analysis, and partnership development and management.
New Site Development: Establish at least five new sites a year by building strong relationships with private and public educational institutions. Open sites in a sustainable manner while utilizing innovative approaches and strategies to build partnerships and awareness, and secure support. Understand and identify growth implications for the organization.
Organizational Leadership: Serve on the Horizons National management team and work closely with the Expansion Committee of the national board of directors.
Candidate Profile and Experience Prerequisites
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred
- Minimum of eight to ten years of work experience; education setting preferred
- Prior higher education management experience is preferred
- Impeccable communication skills
- Ability to build strong relationships with a diverse set of constituents
- Excellent client-service orientation and follow-through
- Demonstrated leadership and ability to build a strong team
- Exceptional goal orientation and an excellent strategic thinker with a proven track record of success
- Excels in an entrepreneurial environment, yet collaborates effectively with others
- Willingness to travel regularly to prospective sites to cultivate interest in running Horizons programs
- Willingness to represent Horizons National at conferences and other relevant education forums
