Overview:

Established in 1946, with headquarters in Washington, D.C., the American Institutes for Research (AIR) is an independent, nonpartisan not-for-profit organization. Our mission is to conduct and apply the best behavioral and social science research to improve lives, especially the disadvantaged. AIR conducts research and evaluation and facilitates policy, practice and systems change and workforce productivity in the U.S. and internationally on a broad range of issues in education, public health, mental health and health care, juvenile justice, and child welfare. AIR is seeking a Vice President (VP) to lead and oversee projects and to build new initiatives in education within our Policy, Practice and Systems Change (PP&SC) service area— all activities related to that part of our mission to apply the research.* This education-focused VP will report to the Senior Vice President overseeing all PP&SC work.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President (SVP), she or he will contribute to the development of the overall vision and strategic direction for the Service Area set by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and SVPs, and will be responsible for communicating and integrating activities of own Service Area with other Service Areas. The role will include managing senior staff and contributing to the Senior Leadership Team (SLT). Location: These positions will be located in one of the following AIR offices - Washington, DC, Rockville, MD, Chicago, IL, Naperville, IL, San Mateo, CA, Austin, TX or Waltham, MA. Washington, DC area preferred.

* The Policy, Practice and Systems Change Service Area in AIR provides services to carry out systems change through training and technical assistance, knowledge translation and utilization, design and delivery of communication campaigns, and monitoring and evaluation for continuous quality improvement.
 

Responsibilities:

The person in this role will have major responsibility to lead and shape AIR’s applied work nationally in the field of Pre-K through 12 education, consistent with current federal and state priorities, such as the Every Student Succeeds Act, Charters and Choice, Access and Equity, Achievement Gap, School Turn Around and Educator Effectiveness.
Responsibilities are to:
• As a member of the PP&SC leadership team, contribute to the vision for AIR’s future work in Pre-K through 12 education, know trends and market opportunities, and with others, create and execute strategic plan to grow new work with federal, state, local, and foundation clients.
• Serve as a thought leader and expert in strengthening federal and state level technical assistance efforts focused on improving educational systems.
• Lead and support project directors in conceptualization, high quality implementation, and defining and measuring outcomes for capacity building work at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Set, monitor, and meet financial targets, as well as oversee financial metrics on projects and development work.
• Develop plans, with staff and AIR’s Communications Department, to achieve preeminence for AIR’s applied work in the education field through presentations at major conferences, publications, visits with clients, etc.
• Work with AIR’s Strategy Office and Practice Area leaders to identify new opportunities, cultivate funding sources, conceptualize, contribute to writing, and conduct critical technical reviews of major proposals.
• Foster collaboration across Professional Services with a mindset that all efforts are directed at leveraging talent and opportunities on behalf of one AIR for success and growth.
 

Qualifications:

• Masters with a minimum of 15 years of experience and 5 years in a leadership/management role in the field of Pre-K-12 education. PhD preferred.
• Established networks in the field (federal, state, local, foundation) with a willingness to draw on, cultivate, and expand relationships on behalf of AIR.
• Experience as a senior leader in an SEA or large LEA, preferably in a strategic role.
• Demonstrated success leading large scale initiatives with evidence of outcomes, ideally in high need areas.
• Track record providing leadership, training and technical assistance, and publications in topics with significant growth potential in Pre-K through 12 education.
• Ability to manage large projects, i.e. multi-million annual revenue and project teams of 10-12 people.
• Track record of conceptualizing and writing winning federal proposals.
• Experience with implementation science, continuous improvement, and building SEA and LEA capacity to support change.
• Demonstrated ability to develop rapport with and lead mission-driven teams with both internal (staff) members and external (subcontractor and consultant) members.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, the ability to listen and understand concerns, and the ability to communicate clearly with a variety of audiences, both internal and external.
