Announcement of Superintendent Search
The Berkeley County Board of Education is seeking a dynamic, innovative leader to serve as superintendent of its county-wide school system that serves more than 34,574 PK-12 students. Berkeley County is located near historic Charleston, South Carolina.
The Board of Education of the Berkeley County School District is seeking a superintendent to lead the school system as it continues its pursuit of excellence. Candidates must meet the legal requirements to be licensed as a superintendent in South Carolina and be qualified to serve under the State Board of Education’s alternative guidelines. Teaching, building level principal, central office, deputy superintendent, or superintendent experience are required. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. A successful candidate will be required to live within the boundaries of the Berkeley County School District. Applications are due by June 12, 2017.

The Berkeley County School District continues its commitment to high performance that is reflected both in and out of the classroom. The Berkeley County School District received an Excellent rating on the state report card from the South Carolina Department of Education. The district contains 20 schools that earned Palmetto Gold or Silver Awards for the 2014-2015 academic year, the 2015 South Carolina Elementary Assistant Principal of the Year, and four National Blue Ribbon Schools with increased recognition daily. Berkeley County School District has strong ties to the business community including the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce and the Charleston Metro-Area Chamber of Commerce. Berkeley County is one of the fastest growing areas in the Southeast. With such a rapid increase in residents and students, Berkeley County School District is changing to support the growth. The school district began its most recent building program, funded by the 2012 School Improvement Referendum, which includes the construction of five new schools, major renovation projects to 4 schools and additional capital improvement projects throughout the district. Students are served by 44 schools, which include 8 high schools, 11 middle schools, 3 intermediate schools, 1 combination elementary and middle school, 1 combination middle and high school, 20 elementary schools, and an alternative school. Berkeley County remains a leader in innovative classroom technology. The district has invested heavily in technology, ensuring every classroom is equipped with Smart Boards, and providing 19,000 Chromebooks as part of its OneBerkeley Connect one to one initiative. Strong emphasis placed on early childhood education with the district offering full day K4 programs as well as full day K5 Kindergarten.
Nestled in the heart of the Lowcountry, Berkeley County is bordered by Charleston and Dorchester Counties, and offers all the conveniences of a major city while maintaining a rural ambiance. Compensation / Terms of employment:
The Board expects to offer an initial multi-year contract with a competitive annual salary and an incentive package plus benefits. The salary range will be $200,000 plus, and the total compensation package will be negotiated with the selected applicant. The Board desires the new superintendent to officially assume this position on a mutually agreed upon date.
