About Flagstaff Academy Charter School

Flagstaff is a K- 8 public charter school with an onsite Pre-school.  In operation since 2005, Flagstaff Academy is now in its 9th year of operation. In 2005-2006, we had 216 students and 23 faculty and staff. Current academic year 2013-2014 ~ 931 students and 84 faculty and staff (331% student growth). As a semi-autonomous school of choice, Flagstaff Academy is operated by a board of directors made up of parents and other community members.  We are governed by a contract between the members of the charter school community and the local school district. Charter schools in Colorado enjoy more flexibility than district public schools and are held accountable to Colorado Department of Education and their authorizer.  For Flagstaff Academy, this is the St. Vrain Valley School District.

Flagstaff Academy has gained a regional reputation for academic excellence and innovation, with a focus on science and technology. The educational philosophies center on core knowledge while supporting national and state standards and contextual teaching/learning . Our curriculum leverages ability grouping and encompasses problem based learning, collaborative/cooperative learning, project based learning, and work based learning. Flagstaff Academy cultivates a strong school culture centered around Core Virtues and Restorative Principles. We boast a qualified staff and low turnover of our professional faculty. Our students go on to the highest echelon of public and private high schools in the area.

Employees, volunteers, and consultants at Flagstaff Academy work together to fulfill the Flagstaff Academy Mission, and are expected to follow all Flagstaff Academy policies and procedures.  The following description provides an overview of the responsibilities and accountability for this position. Flagstaff Academy employs professionals who work beyond job descriptions, creating a fulfilling and caring environment which contributes to successful outcomes for our students.

Position Summary  

Flagstaff Academy’s Executive Director will be a visionary and inspiring leader with

experience or familiarity working in charter, public, or private school settings. The Executive Director serves as the chief administrative official, providing organizational leadership and development.  Responsible for upholding the school’s mission and executing the school’s Strategic Plan, the Executive Director is accountable to the Flagstaff Academy community through the Board of Directors. The Executive Director fosters connections between the school and the community, oversees regulatory compliance of the school, coordinates fundraising, and manages day-to-day, non-academic operations of the school. The Executive Director supervises and supports the Chief Academic Officer, who is charged with guiding the academic success of the student body, and supervising the instructional staff.  The Executive Director should have administrative experience in education or non-profit sectors; have an accomplished background in leadership in education or non-profit areas; and be aligned with the school’s strategic plan, mission, and vision.


Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Leads the organization in a manner that engages and empowers others to take action and responsibility to achieve results

  • Fosters an organizational culture that exhibits the Flagstaff Academy Core Virtues and open communications among all stakeholders

  • Serves the Flagstaff Academy Community with integrity, professionalism, respect, and those attributes that inspire confidence and collaboration to achieve organizational goals (‘servant leader’)

  • Visible, accessible, and connected - internally and externally

Operations

  • Responsible for facility and program operations, personnel, communications, finance, and human resources staff and functions

  • Manages operating budget and ensures compliance with legal and contractual obligations including District contract, bond finance, state and federal regulations

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe learning and working environment


Development and Communication

  • Develops relationships and maintains a positive image of the school in the local, regional, and national community

  • Participates in community affairs that promote the school’s vision and place in our community

  • Develops new revenue sources including grants in alignment with the Strategic Plan

  • Establish and foster corporate and academic partnerships

  • Work with the Board of Directors and key stakeholders to develop a master facilities plan


Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Education or related field

  • At least 7 years of professional experience, with at least 3 years leadership experience at a management level (staff supervision and budget management)

  • Demonstrated experience in effectively solving challenging problems through a positive, collaborative approach

  • Experience and knowledge of budget management in alignment with strategic priorities

  • Demonstrated experience in development including fundraising and strategic external partnerships (such as grant writing, researching, reporting, management, corporate partnerships, etc.)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in in Business, Finance, Education, or related field

  • Substantial experience as a successful leader

  • Demonstrated organizational leadership experience in a similarly-sized organization

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with a variety of population

  • Demonstrated experience in entrepreneurial environment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of school law

  • Experience in facilities management


Supervision Received and Exercised

The Flagstaff Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors. The Executive Director will have oversight and ultimate responsibility for all employees of Flagstaff Academy, with specific supervisory duties for the Chief Academic Officer, business office, and operations staff. The Executive Director will report to Flagstaff Board of Directors which has hiring/termination approval authority for Executive Director, Chief Academic Officer, and Assistant Principal positions.


Working Conditions

The work environment described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The hours may be long when specific needs arise, thus some extended schedules will be necessary. This is a position that must attend the needs of staff, administrators, Flagstaff Academy Board of Directors, and parents. Work may consist of ten (10) plus hour days, with weekend work required .


This is a full time, exempt position located in Longmont, Colorado. A highly competitive compensation and benefits package, commensurate with qualifications and experience, will be provided to the successful candidate.
