GENERAL DESCRIPTION :
The Library Assistant helps to manage the daily operation of the library facility, is responsible for maintaining accurate patron and collection information in the online catalog and circulation systems, assists students and teachers with library use, assists the librarian with student supervision when necessary, maintains accurate records on all library budget accounts, supervises student and parent volunteers, and processes all new library materials for proper entry in the library collection.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
LIBRARY MANAGEMENT:
Manage traffic flow in and out of library
Perform basic maintenance and repair on the library collection and equipment
Supervise library volunteers
Execute daily startup and shut down of library computer systems and maintain system backups
Update daily schedule/booking use of space
Manage mail, library calendar and copying needs
Handle library correspondence
Pull and shelve books for curriculum projects
Help conduct annual inventory of books
PATRON SUPPORT:
Assist students and staff in locating library materials and using online information systems
Assist students and faculty with basic questions about computer use including library databases
Assist students and faculty with basic questions about library databases
Supervise students in the library when necessary during school day, and routinely during after school hours
TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE:
Process and prepare new materials for entry into the library collection
Download MARC records for new books into the online system and examine for record accuracy
Maintain the accuracy of patron collection information in the online catalog database software
Create, organize and maintain database and spreadsheet files for library budget, collection recordkeeping, and patron use
- Candidate should have a high school diploma
- Candidate should demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain good rapport with students and teachers
- Candidate should demonstrate the ability to work with an online library catalog and an understanding of machine readable catalog (MARC) records
- Candidate should demonstrate the ability to operate a calculator, copying equipment and perform word processing, database and spreadsheet functions
- Candidate possesses a basic understanding of library classification systems
- Candidate should provide references indicating that
