Harlem Link Charter School seeks Director of After School Programs and Special Projects to join for the development and launch in School Year 2019-20.
Position Summary
The Director of After School Programs, reporting to the Principal, has overall accountability for the development, growth, quality, and success of the daily after school program hosted at Harlem Link's elementary school. The Director secures and manages all operational and staffing needs to ensure the program has sufficient instructional support and that students are engaged in a broad range of high-quality, fun, mission-aligned extracurricular activities after school, in line with the Harlem Link mission and scaffolded to be age appropriate across the K-5 students enrolled. She or he develops relationships with Harlem Link families and partners, supporting student and staff recruitment and retention initiatives throughout the year and audits for program quality and compliance.
The Director works in conjunction with key school personnel to implement daily programming and manage a smooth integration with the regular school day. She or he serves as a member of the school-based administrative team and is responsible for supporting the communication and troubleshooting of schoolwide concerns, as they may impact the after school program, including: scheduling of extracurricular and tutoring activities after school; developing curricula and partnerships aligned with the Link model and classroom instruction; managing budgetary and administrative needs for the program; supporting development of school-wide safety and operational systems ;and planning after school events for students and families (in coordination with further members of the School Management Team). The Director always conducts her/himself with the utmost professional manner and positivity, as a representative of the Harlem Link family and as a leader with a belief in the Responsive Classroom model.
Our after school program will run from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM during the week, with some evening hours for pre-announced events. The Director is expected to be on-site during school and after school hours to accommodate meetings and training with school and after school staff, with a staggered schedule to accommodate the extended afternoon program hours.
Outcomes and Responsibilities
Outcome 1: After school programs have and execute a strong vision for high quality and growth, and consonance with school day program.
  • Draft, communicate, execute and revise a five-year vision for after-school programming at Harlem Link, incorporating priorities from board, administration, faculty and family perspectives.
  • Engage in continual program reflection evaluation, including soliciting feedback from families and school day staff.
  • Evaluate the program toward five-year and one-year goals against pre-determined metrics using multiple layers of evaluation (self, constituents, external).
  • Collaborate with school staff to support fundraising initiatives, including but not limited to providing language, stories, testimonials and photographs for proposals and collateral; drafting and/or reviewing proposal and messaging language; and appearing before audiences as needed to make the case for the program's needs.
  • Plan and lead, utilizing school systems and procedures, special events as needed to support the goals of after-school programs.
Outcome 2: Oversight and systems for all after school programs ensure safety and clear communication with all stakeholders.
  • Establish and reinforce basic routines for transitions, use of time, use of space, emergency procedures, staff evaluation and supervision and communication with families and school day staff.
  • Devise and revise procedures and manuals for core after-school functions, notably communication with office and school day staff regarding student dismissal.
  • Manage the program within constraints of a board-approved operating budget.
  • Ensure staffing levels sufficient for a high level of safety and program quality.
Outcome 3: Sustain a minimum of 70 on-site seats and 120 partnership seats in programs that pick up at the school.
  • Prioritize kindergarten and first grade for on-site seats, evaluating this priority based on annually collected data and feedback.
  • Incorporate on-site pre-kindergarten as a priority grade if possible.
  • Select and evaluate partner programs for mission fit, safe transitions and sufficient quality.
  • Manage day to day logistics with partner programs, including ensuring timely pickup.
  • Ensure smooth communication with partner programs, including enrollment changes, day closures and other logistical needs.
Outcome 4: The board, School Management Team and fundraising team have information needed to evaluate and support the program.
  • Prepare written monthly quantitative and qualitative reports on program growth and success.
  • Prepare monthly reports on budget to actuals for the principal and the board of trustees' finance committee.
Outcome 5: School administration members contribute to a positive, orderly, unified school culture.
  • Model and enforce through supervision team norms and professionalism expectations.
  • Take responsibility for building the school's positive and supportive school culture.
  • Provide empathetic and assertive intervention when actions of community members threaten a positive and supportive school culture.
