Position Description
Condon K-8 seeks to hire a Special Education Director to provide vision and leadership to our Special Education program while also supervising and directly supporting our compliance needs and requirements. The Condon K-8 Special Education Director will be responsible for running IEP meetings (at least 20% of the time), supervising Special Education paraprofessionals, two COSES, Inclusion Specialist, Severe Special Education Strand, Substantially Separate classrooms and teachers, coordinating and providing professional development for staff on Special Education topics, facilitating program development and inclusive practices together with Special Education teachers, overseeing the planning and facilitation of the Student Support Team, coordinating itinerant service providers and testing of students, managing our DESE and BPS mandated requirements, including Coordinated Program Reviews and follow up, analyzing data on Students with Disabilities to help drive their academic improvement, and other tasks outlined in the general job description below.

The Condon K-8 Special Education Director will be part of the school's administrative team and will report to work in August as per the Condon K-8 administrative staff requirements. Demonstrated success and experience with diverse urban student populations similar to Condon, strong commitment to serving Students with Disabilities and their families, creativity, flexibility, leadership for equity, grace under pressure, and a sense of humility and humor are all preferred.

General Description and Goals:
The Sped Program Director is responsible for providing school-wide leadership and support in the following areas: implementation of city-wide learning standards, development and implementation of city-wide assessments, program development, professional development, and grant development and management. The Program Director is supported by the BPS Special Education department. The Program Director supports an array of professional development activities.
Terms: BASAS, Group 9A
Reports to: Headmaster
Responsibilities:
  1. Assists the in implementation of all special education programs, including but not limited to the coordination of the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students referred for Chapter 28 services, testing, running meetings, and the creation and implementation of 504s and 688s and, in carrying out all Chapter 28 regulations and court orders.
  2. Develops and implements inclusive programming and opportunities with school leadership and to evaluate and monitor their effectiveness in terms of quality service to students.
  3. Work with staff members, both in the classroom and through professional development opportunities, to support differentiated instruction.
  4. Assists in planning the implementation of literacy programs and behavior intervention models to support alignment of citywide learning standards with effective teaching practices.
  5. Model, co-teach, and observe in classes.
  6. Provide feedback and suggestions to support teachers in their efforts to instruct a range of learners.
  7. Support the creation and implementation of MCAS-Alternative portfolios.
  8. Develop systems for students to receive IEP and 504 accommodations for state and district wide assessments.
  9. Student Support Team
  10. Assume a lead role in the professional development activities of special education and regular education teachers to improve instruction for all special education students.
  11. Oversee the development and coordination of curriculum goals and objectives and distribution of instructional materials for the school's special education programs.
  12. Work with families to increase their engagement in their child's school experience.
  13. Maintain responsive lines of communication among students, parents, and staff involved with special education programs.
  14. Support improved attendance and timeliness, homework completion, classroom on-task behavior, etc.
  15. Work collaboratively with school administrators, faculty and staff to ensure consistent implementation of the school-based rules and the Code of Conduct
  16. Perform other responsibilities as designated by the Headmaster.
Qualifications:
Required:
  1. Master's Degree in education with a concentration in Special Education Administration and/or a related field
  2. Massachusetts Supervisor/Director license or Administrator of Special Education Provisional with Advanced Standing or Standard
  3. Three (3) years teaching experience
  4. Massachusetts teacher license in special education
  5. Experience and training in the supervision and evaluation of teachers/as a professional developer
  6. Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and parents
  7. Ability to establish a diverse multicultural atmosphere that enhances individual growth and promotes a positive self-image
  8. Experience with and/or knowledge of educational reform
  9. Experience with and knowledge of advising programs
  10. Knowledge of MA Curriculum Frameworks, Vocational Frameworks and Assessment

Preferred:
  1. Experience in working with students during transitions (orientations, moving to college)
  2. Experience developing or working within both an inclusion model and a learning center model
  3. Interest in working in fast-paced environment and ability to manage multiple responsibilities with humor and enthusiasm
