QUALIFICATIONS:
Demonstrated successful experience playing the sport or coaching the sport at the middle school/youth level
Teaching certification or the ability to demonstrate a strong understanding of pedagogy
Current CPR/First Aid Certification
National coaching certification preferred (ASEP/NFHS/Other Governing Body)
Understanding of basic fundamentals and movements of the sport
Knowledge of current trends, tactics, strategies, and skills of the sport
Ability to communicate effectively with students, coaches, parents, faculty members and administrators
Experience working with urban students
Availability to organize and implement a year-round training program
REPORTS TO: Head Varsity Coach/ Faculty Manager/ Principal
SUPERVISES: Assistant Coaches
JOB GOAL: To organize, administer, facilitate and maintain a successful middle school athletic team which supports and feeds the freshmen team and supports the JV/Varsity program of the School District of Lancaster
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Adhere to paperwork deadlines – eligibility lists, team roster, transportation schedules, inventory sheets, equipment order forms, assistant coaches' evaluations, and various other paperwork required by the SDoL, LL League, and PIAA
Possess a thorough understanding of all PIAA and NFHS rules appropriate to the sport
Delegate duties to assistant coaches
Adhere to attendance, eligibility and discipline policies
Collect and inventory equipment
Attend scheduled meetings with head varsity coach
Attend trainings, clinics, or conferences provided by the head varsity coach or athletic director
Attend all JV/Varsity practices which occur prior to the start of the middle school season
Communicate regularly with youth coaches running programs which serve as feeder programs
Actively recruit students and encourage participation
Maintain student participation during the season
Provide team building activities throughout the year
Ensure that all coaches are positive role models for students
Supervise coaches as they perform delegated duties
Conduct thorough evaluations (written and discussed) of assistant coaches at the end of the season
Teach techniques, strategies, and tactics which align with the varsity program and prepare athletes to move to that level
Prepare season-long, monthly, and weekly plans for preparation and improvement (instruction, drill, competition, conditioning, and recovery)
Prepare and communicate a written practice plan for each practice
Create daily practice plans which include clear objectives and organization that reflect season-long, monthly, and weekly plans
Provide time for instruction, drill, and competition as appropriate
Model respect toward athletes, official, opposing team and spectators
Teach respect toward teammates, opposing team, officials and spectators
Provide written communication to athletes and parents which define standards of behavior
Administer consistent, fair and firm discipline
Work in cooperation with SDoL administrators, teachers, and support staff.
Develop and demonstrate positive relationships with SDoL administrators, teachers, and support staff
Provide year-round opportunities for athletes in the form of open gyms, camps, and/or competitive leagues
Encourage athletes to continue participating at the freshman level
Support the decisions and philosophy of the head varsity coach
Other duties assigned by supervisor
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Visit youth teams during the season (i.e. Sertoma, LRC, etc)
Assist with the raising of funds through booster club/parent organization
TERMS OF CONTRACT: Hours indicated in SDoL/LEA Contract
EVALUATION: Performance is evaluated per the Athletic Handbook

Inside the McCaskey Campus and middle school buildings
McCaskey Campus athletic fields and middle school athletic fields
On buses transporting students
At opposing teams' buildings and athletic fields
