Jefferson High School is committed to creating an enriching educational environment that promotes student achievement and success by addressing individual student needs, integrating technology, promoting safety throughout the school, and encouraging parent-community participation. Our school serves 271 students in 7-8 grade and 460 students in 9-12 grade who come from all over the Metro Denver area. We are proud of our diverse community and the "SAINTS" strive for greatness. RESPONSIBILITIES

SUMMARY: Provide instruction for English language learners (ELLs) and work with building and District staff to ensure academic success for ELLs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Conduct English proficiency testing, administer District assessments, monitor student progress in academic and language growth and complete appropriate documentation for ELLs in a timely manner

Select, offer and teach appropriate ESL course offerings from the District ESL course descriptions based on student data.

Collaborate with ESL resource teacher, school instructional coach, counselors and other school and District staff to monitor student progress and make appropriate instructional decisions for ELLs

Teach appropriate levels of English language development (ELD) courses to ELLs from diverse language and cultural backgrounds.

Provide language instruction in the four domains of English language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Implement the ESL/Dual Language curriculum for ESL courses offered based on student need.

Develop, lead and participate in building level professional development and staff meetings. Attend all professional development and trainings provided by the ESL/Dual Language department.

Support content area teachers in sheltering instruction for ELLs through consultation, collaborative, co-planning and/or co-teaching model.

Use Jeffco Curriculum documents to be able to teach a sheltered content area course if applicable and appropriate.

Work closely with school counselors, families and students to build student schedules and develop graduation plans for all ELLs.

Provide effective communication with ELL families by accessing Translation Services for written translation and oral interpretation as needed.

Plan and facilitate ELL parent meetings with District ESL/DL Resource Teachers and Home/School Liaisons.

QUALIFICATIONS: Current Colorado teaching license with English as a Second Language or Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement or in process (minimum 6 graduate level classes completed). If endorsement is in process, must commit to completion within 18 months. Must be highly qualified in English Language Arts, social studies, science or mathematics.

EXPERIENCE: Experience working in and helping lead schools and communities with a growing ELL student population. Experienced in integrating technology into the classroom as an instructional tool and for personal productivity. Demonstrate excellent classroom management skills. Successfully demonstrate the use of standards based lessons, rubrics and assessments. Documented classroom experience.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Knowledge of reading/writing process for second language learners. Knowledge of sheltered instruction techniques. Knowledge of and commitment to English Language Development standards, language acquisition theory, best-practices and research-based instructional strategies in literacy, co-planning and co-teaching, data driven instruction, and differentiation strategies. Ability to demonstrate a belief that all children can learn through differentiated core instruction. Demonstrated ability to coach teachers and support them in effectively planning ESL strategies in the general education classroom. Ability to collaborate with classified staff, instructional coaches, administrators, and district ESL resource teacher. Knowledge of assessment linked to instruction, such as using standards based lessons and rubrics. Demonstrated commitment to teamwork in establishing and meeting student achievement goals, school goals, and professional development goals through team planning and active participation in professional development opportunities.
