REPORTS TO : Fleet Technician Supervisor

SUMMARY : Supervises and assists employees in performing various motor vehicle maintenance tasks (school buses, automobiles and trucks), schedules and assigns repairs in an efficient and safe manner in compliance with Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) regulations, and maintains related records. Position works under direct supervision and also has supervisory responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :
Supervises and assists technicians, mechanics and other motor vehicle maintenance employees. Prepares and provides formal and informal performance feedback. Recommends corrective or disciplinary action as needed.

Oversees training of employees, identifies appropriate training needs and opportunities. Assists with the interview and selection process for technicians, mechanics and other vehicle maintenance employees.

Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new vehicle technologies. Maintains current knowledge of local, state and federal laws pertaining to public transportation vehicles. Communicates updates to vehicle maintenance employees.

Prioritizes and schedules vehicle repair work. Manages repair work processes to ensure timely responses, compliance with mandated vehicle inspection schedules and minimal down time of vehicles.

Performs vehicle maintenance tasks as needed. Generates and maintains records of vehicles and vehicle repairs.

Orders parts needed to make vehicle repairs; approves outside expenditures as needed; performs credit card reconciliations. Maintains a positive working relationship with outside vendors and contractors.

Maintains and oversees inventory of parts, tools, fuel, materials and supplies.

Coordinates vehicle moves from various facilities; road tests vehicles; assists with snow removal duties and other inclement weather events.

Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training and Experience :
High School Diploma or appropriate equivalent. Seven years of recent experience in automotive repair, including one year at a supervisory level.
Formal training on current automotive technologies and repair techniques preferred.

Licenses and Certificates :
Possession of a valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.

Possession of a valid commercial class B Maryland driver's license (CDL) or an equivalent. ( This license may require certain endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Possession of ASE Certification(s) preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Knowledge of the principles and practices of motor vehicle repair and maintenance. Knowledge of motor vehicle parts, components and systems. Knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in motor vehicle repair and maintenance. Knowledge of federal and state public transportation regulations.

Skill and ability to supervise motor vehicle maintenance employees. Skill and ability in diagnosing and repair of motor vehicle malfunctions. Skill and ability to use motor vehicle maintenance equipment, including but not limited to various hand tools; vehicle lifts and jacks; brake lathes; electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment; tire mounting and balancing equipment; electronic diagnostic equipment; welding and cutting equipment; air conditioning service equipment. Skill and ability to communicate effectively with school system employees, MVA employees, contractors and vendors. Skill in maintaining records and preparing reports. Skill in the use of computers and required software packages (Microsoft Office, inventory and fleet maintenances packages).

Ability to maintain confidential information. Ability to maintain effective working relationships.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
Work is performed in a vehicle repair shop, office, and outdoors when performing road service or snow removal. Work involves exposure to dirt and grease from vehicles, machinery noise, bad weather conditions, and risk of injury from machinery, working at heights, and lifting moderate weights up to 50 pounds.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Persons appointed to this classification are designated as Essential Personnel and are required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency.
Persons appointed to this class may be required to work beyond their normally-scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice.
Persons holding a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing procedures in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.

SALARY: Grade 03 on the BCPS OPE 12 Month payscale $59,041 - $91,276

FLSA STATUS : Exempt

Position is eligible for membership in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System.

This class specification defines the types of duties and level of difficulty of work required of positions in this title. It shall not be held to exclude duties not mentioned nor limit the right of management to assign work to employees.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to contract signing.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
