Bed-Stuy New Beginnings:

Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School is an elementary and middle school proudly serving the students in our neighborhood in Brooklyn, affectionately known worldwide as 'Bed-Stuy'. Opened in 2010, we serve more than 670 scholars in Kindergarten - Eighth Grade through the pursuit of 21st century learning, project based & service learning, and traditional coursework strategies, students will be prepared to succeed in academically competitive schools as well as become responsible citizens of the global community.

Our Elementary Math Dean of Instruction:

The Dean of Instruction will manage the effective implementation of curriculum and instruction with our Elementary Teachers. The Dean of Instruction is responsible for the coaching and mentoring of teachers in both pedagogy and content knowledge appropriate for the grade level and content assigned. You'll also be responsible for planning and executing professional development sessions and professional learning communities.

Your primary duties will be to work collaboratively with the Dean of Curriculum to facilitate the implementation of curriculum, and with the Principal and Assistant Principal to further the development of instructional staff members. You will also monitor student performance to ensure effective responses are created to ensure positive student progress and learning.

A day in the life of our Elementary Math Dean of Instruction:

Curriculum, Assessment and Student Achievement:
  • Assist the Dean of Curriculum in the research, design and supplementation of academic curriculum for assigned grade level based on successful models and approaches.
  • Assist with the alignment of academic curriculum with state standards, BSNBCS standards, and other scientifically-based benchmarks.
  • Document and communicate the scope and sequence for assigned grade level(s)
  • Monitor grade level-progress against the scope and sequence.
  • Analyze school-wide and grade level data regularly in order to design responsive student interventions
  • Devise and monitor high-impact support plans for struggling students
  • Track other useful academic data (e.g. homework completion rates); communicate progress to students, teachers and parents.
  • Direct and mentor teachers in effective lesson planning processes to ensure both effective learning and alignment with the academic pacing calendar.
  • Direct the interim assessment process to ensure that teachers are using data to drive instruction.
  • Champion effective instructional data practices and assessments.
  • Facilitate regular, meaningful interim assessment data debriefs with teachers.
  • Maintain a variety of files; prepare periodic and special reports as required. Assist the Assistant Principal to identify the special needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of school system specialists as required.
  • Support a culture of high academic and behavioral expectations

Coaching:
  • Directly coach a portfolio of teachers to help them continuously improve as professionals.
  • Observe lessons and provide on-going, specific, actionable, positive and constructive feedback that ensures the teacher can translate the feedback into improved instruction.
  • Effectively plan both full units and individual lessons with teachers, guiding them through the entire backwards-planning process.
  • Provide clear, actionable feedback to teachers on classroom management, lesson planning, and lesson implementation
  • Model outstanding instruction and classroom management for teachers
  • Lead planning and internalization meetings for teachers to effectively prepare them for lesson implementation.
  • Complete formal teacher evaluations.

School Leadership:
  • Design and run high-quality professional development sessions that are based on student achievement and observation data.
  • Perform formal classroom observations for teachers
  • Work with each team member to set clear, measurable, outcome-oriented academic goals for the year and plan professional development opportunities around those academic goals.
  • Reflect on actions and adjust behavior and systems accordingly; ask regularly for feedback; model humility and admit mistakes; seek out thought partners.

What you need to bring to the table:

Education: Master's degree in Education, School Building Leadership or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Must have a measurable and proven record of teaching and/ or school leadership success in an urban District, Private or Charter School.Teaching experience: Must have at least (5) years of prior successful experience teaching elementary students in an urban school. Must have experience teaching multiple grade levels. School Leadership experience: Prior experience in mentoring and coaching teachers in the school environment is preferred. Must have experience with conducting staff professional development.

Certification: Certificates as determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). NYSED Teacher certification: Must have a valid teacher's certificate in appropriate subject and with grade specific endorsement(s) issued by the NYSED. NYSED Teacher certification in Childhood Education or Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 is preferred. NYSED School Administrator or Supervisor, School District Administrator or School Building Leader, or School Building Leader certification preferred.

Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with and developing educators in a school environment.

Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, internet and word processing software, and spreadsheets including, but not limited to Google Suite applications, Microsoft Office Suite applications and Apple MacBook iOs.

Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and of the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of adolescent students. Possesses knowledge of effective behavior management methods. Ability to meet timelines and exercise good judgment while working in a dynamic environment. Other skills and abilities required are:
  • A deep level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards
  • Evidence of success in working with teachers
  • Evidence of strong planning and organizational skills
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of reading and writing instructional strategies necessary to support the Common Core State Standards in all content areas
  • Ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of the school.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Evidence of establishing and maintaining effective working
    relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development,
    instructional practices, interpretation of test data
