Sexual Health and Responsibility Education (SHARE) Safe and Drug Free Schools
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under the general direction of the Executive Director of Student Pathway and Guidance Counseling Services, the Counseling Coordinator plans, develops, coordinates, implements and is responsible for various functions in relation to counseling programs including staff, Sexual Health and Responsibility Education (SHARE), and Safe and Drug Free School programs. Performs related work as assigned.
EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide support to counselors K-12 in two of the four district areas; facilitate level meetings monthly; facilitate Zone/Vertical trainings each trimester; ensure that staff has adequate materials, information, and curriculum in order to meet competencies of students; find and secure funding for curriculum; maintain Angel website for all counselors on a regular basis; maintain database and website for community resources; communicate with community resources to maintain current stream of information to counselors for referral resources; site visit with individual counselors and counseling teams to stay abreast of needs at the site level; participate with vertical teams to ensure better transitions for students; plan and coordinate lead counselor meetings to provide leadership for lead secondary counselors; implementation of the ASCA National Model includes, Cohort Activities, site support, and site supervision of implementation, organization of training and professional development, closing The Gap Report monitoring, curriculum development and implementation, collaboration with administration in establishment of management agreements, and participate on National Model Advisory teams; professional development planning and implementation in August and February; collaboration with State Counseling Coordinator from CTE/DOE; train for counselors for use of National and State Standards during Professional Days; attend Leadership Forum twice a year in Reno/Las Vegas; and collaborate with State School Counseling Conference with state leaders.
Child abuse protocol includes the following: provide training for K-12 Counselors in NRS, methods, and protocol as train-the-trainer model; counselors provide training to site staff; review and establish district protocol to ensure compliance with NRS; collaborate with nursing and psychological services to communicate district training and protocol methods; collaborate with Educational Support Professionals to ensure all Washoe County School District (WCSD) classified personnel, substitutes, volunteers are appropriately and adequately trained; develop on-line training for staff who cannot be trained in person; collect data on child abuse and neglect, reporting to WCSD to inform practices; problem solve with Social Services and develop a positive working relationship between Social Services and reporting parties in WCSD; participate monthly as a committee member on the WCSD Parent Involvement Committee; participate monthly as a committee member on the WCSD GT Parent Advisory Committee; provide information and training for all counselors on the specific needs and referral processes to identify GT students; participate and collaborate with departments as needed for special population needs of Early Childhood, Family Resource Center, Children in Transition, Special Education, gang prevention, and discipline issues.
Act as foster care liaison for WCSD collaborating with stakeholders to hold the Youth Guardian Scholar Day for junior and senior foster care students in February each year at TMCC; attend Model Court each month; work with Court Liaison to remove barriers for foster students by facilitating placement, preserving permanence and problem solving to promote success; work in collaboration with Social Services to develop comprehensive database that will provide accurate identification of foster care students in the district; gather data on foster student success to report to Social Services and Family Court Student Advocacy; participate on the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) each week for student attendance; participate on the SARB II Board each month to follow up on student attendance staffing and provide further support for students; chair the Elementary SARB Board as needed to problem solve early intervention for elementary families; initiate site visits to follow up with elementary SARB students; participate with community stakeholders monthly to establish protocol and assess data from SARB process; participate bi-monthly on a community panel of Child Death Review established by NRS to review all child deaths in Washoe County for prevention/intervention with child death trends; develop and propose protocol for more effective intervention in child death incidents for school and in the community including, revision of crisis response, child abuse reporting protocol, and investigation of child deaths; collaborate with State Suicide Prevention Coordinator to plan training, coordinate prevention/intervention activities, and communicate training strategies for suicide prevention for all students and adults; participate in Systems of Care Committee to develop comprehensive mental health services for WCSD students; participate monthly as a member of the Emergency Management Committee to plan, strategize, train and prepare for crisis response in Washoe County; and provide information and support from the Counseling Department as part of crisis response.
When assigned to SHARE Program Supervise and evaluate SHARE teachers; schedule and assign school SHARE service; facilitate parent preview nights; ensure State and District compliance with laws and policy; organize SHARE related trainings and development; coordinate SHARE Multidisciplinary Community Advisory Board; set advisory agenda and facilitate monthly meetings in accordance with open meeting law; bring materials, curriculum changes and programming recommended by the advisory board to the WCSD Board of Trustees; assist the Board of Trustees in appointment of new advisory board members; collaborate with principals, support staff, nursing, counseling and other district departments concerning sexual health education; address parent concerns and problems; team with like community agencies for the betterment of the program; update resources and referrals related to SHARE; evaluate programs, manage budgets and SHARE related grants; and address media concerns about the topic of sexual health.
When assigned to Safe & Drug Schools Program Assist with WCSD policies, procedures and practices to support safe and drug free learning environments including crafting drafts and updating required changes with PPAA, Legal, Governmental Relations and other departments; serve the WCSD Trustees, parents and administration concerning related issues; retain Substance Abuse Prevention Treatment Agency and other prevention certification for WCSD, obtain related funding and facilitate successful use of grants, gifts and community funds targeting the reduction of substance abuse, violence and the promotion of safe schools; set the coursework, hire and supervise/evaluate the instructors of weekly parent and student programs with Violence Intervention Program, Substance Abuse Intervention Program, and the Smoking Intervention Program; manage budgets of district intervention programs and allocate Saturday School funds out to schools; support and collect data to share with district and community partners for Safe and Drug Free Schools, including the facilitation of The Youth Risk Behavioral Survey in randomly selected second period classes and student/teacher climate and culture data; maintain compliance with state requirements related to safe schools to service charter and non-profit private schools; assist with positive behavioral supports, tier interventions and wrap around services; collaborate within the district and in the community to maintain and support resources, referrals and services to students and parents related to prevention and intervention, and school safety and substance abuse; promote and support parent and community engagement; obtain, create, deliver, develop and distribute materials and training to teachers, parents, students and support staff related to prevention and intervention and school safety (bullying, sexting, conflict resolution, cyberbullying, substance abuse, suicide, eating disorders and school climate, etc.); facilitate the Gang Resistance Intervention Program and collaborate with school police on programming and services to gang students and their parents; ensure collaborative inclusion of best practices for students in WCSD by working with school police, nursing, school counseling, positive behavioral supports, student discipline, emergency management, special education, gifted education and interventions/ truancy with related community agencies focusing on alignment, needs, and teamwork; address media concerning issues of prevention and intervention and school safety using the recommendations of the Communications Department; and proactively promote the WCSD school safety and prevention and intervention activities to reach-out to parents and community members in a positive manner; and maintain and update resources and website. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education/Experience: Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
1. Education: A Master's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in school counseling.
AND
2. Experience: Five (5) years school counseling experience.
Knowledge of: Comprehensive K-12 Counseling and Guidance program development and implementation; basic principles of behavior theory; teacher/counselor evaluation process; current information pertaining to assigned program areas; principles of effective management, staff supervision and administration.
Skill at: Consultation; group dynamics; appropriate computer skills and applications; organizing, assigning and coordinating district-wide programs; creating, planning, organizing and coordinating activities and workshops; communication and collaborating with groups and individuals; communicating effectively orally and in writing; evaluating, assessing and revising programs; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; staff supervision and administration.
Licenses/Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid State of Nevada driver's license with a driving record acceptable to the District, possession of a valid Nevada counseling certificate. To be a licensed administrator, possession of a valid Nevada Administrative License is required.

Additional Job Information The Washoe County School District pays an additional legislatively-designated amount to the Public Employees Retirement System on behalf of the employee for retirement benefits. No retirement contribution is made by the employee. New employees will have $55.00 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Please be advised there is a 90-day waiting period for insurance benefits. New employees hired by the Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step (step one) of the grade of the position.
