POSITION: Butterfly/Greenhouse Laboratory Technician/Curator REPORTS TO: Principal POSITION SUMMARY: The curator/technician will be responsible for maintaining and caring for a 600 square feet greenhouse and a 1400 square feet indoor butterfly vivarium. The butterfly vivarium/greenhouse and garden technician/curator will also be responsible for ordering, caring for and raising the butterflies and plants. The candidate will provide regular labs on request by staff and occasional shows by the public.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors of Science Degree in botany and/or 3 - 5 years of experience working and caring for a greenhouse.
Demonstrated knowledge of how plants grow, reproduce, and manufacture food, especially those plants that produce nutrients to support the life cycle of butterflies.
Knowledge of the effects of temperature, humidity, light, and other environmental conditions on plant life processes.
Knowledge of biological control of unwanted insects.
Must have excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills
PREFERRED:
Practical experience raising and maintaining butterflies, especially species from North America and the North East.
Experience running a vivarium facility.
Possess knowledge and experience developing background school gardens.
Inventorying supplies and developing purchase orders.
Experience developing shows and providing presentations to the public.
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 month work year. Salary: $40,863 - $48,461. Candidate must be able to work a flexible work schedule.
