The Maryland State Department of Education is seeking highly qualified candidates for the newly created position of Chief Academic Officer (CAO). This position reports directly to the State Superintendent and is responsible for supervising five Assistant Superintendents within the department. The CAO is responsible for department leadership and oversight of the following divisions: 1) Curriculum, Assessment and Accountability, 2) Early Childhood Development, 3) Special Education and Early Intervention Services, 4) Career and College Readiness (which includes Juvenile Services Education Programs), and 5) Library Development Services.
This person will be part of the newly reorganized leadership team within the Maryland State Department of Education. Critical skills sets needed for the CAO include a deep understanding of teaching and learning, particularly in areas of curriculum, assessment, special education, early childhood education, and career and technical education. Knowledge of Common Core standards, Race To The Top grants, and organizational change efforts would be highly valued and applicable.
