Job Title: Director - Science
JOB SUMMARY
Provides district-wide leadership in K-12 science curriculum, instruction, assessment and professional development to support and coach City Schools senior leadership, principals, and educators in the work of implementing the K-12 Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum(VSC) and the Core Learning Goals (CLGs) for high school, and in future years the Next Generation Science Standards. Develops and implements district science objectives through the Baltimore City Public School Master Plan by supporting areas and schools in using science as an instructional focus to drive changes in classroom practices, examine student performance and school performance, align the use of current resources to the instructional focus, set performance benchmarks, and design a professional development plan to meet these benchmarks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Plan and coordinate the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards in City Schools
• Develop and deliver ongoing professional development around best practices in science education for new and veteran teachers
• Use data collected to strategically support the needs of teachers and schools
• Develop and provide appropriate guidance for schools and school leaders on best practices in science education
• Coordinate and develop curriculum and assessments for science content areas
• Work collaboratively with a highly motivated team from multiple offices to advance teaching and learning in the district
• Keep the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning abreast of all matters related to science education
QUALIFICATIONS
• Masters degree in Education or related field, or Model Teacher pathway. Degree must be from an accredited college or institution
• Four years teaching experience in science content areas
• Strong science content knowledge and experience designing science curriculum and assessments
• Valid Maryland State Department of Education Advanced Professional Certificate (APC) with endorsement as Principal/Supervisor or Administrator I
• Three years experience developing and delivering professional development to teachers in urban school settings that includes experience beyond the school level
