POSITION DESCRIPTION: Adams County School District 14 is seeking an outstanding individual to acquire, coordinate, provide and monitor legal information and legal compliance issues for the district.  The General Counsel will advise the Board of Education, Superintendent, other administrators and district staff on legal issues affecting the district and will provide district-wide, general in-house legal support including, but not limited to, providing leadership for compliance with federal, state and local laws relating to staff, students and the public. The General Counsel also oversees development and implementation of district policies and serves as a resource to ensure compliance and consistent application.  This position is responsible for supervision of the Legal Assistant. 
�        Policy 
�        Provide legal advice, consultation and written memoranda about application of district policies and procedures to situations at all levels of operations.   
�        Establish, publicize and participate in implementation of systems and strategies to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.  
�        Formulate, research, and edit district policies having legal implications pertaining to all phases of district operations. 
�        Legal Advisement 
�        Investigate and research emerging issues with legal and/or policy implications and advises the Superintendent accordingly; ensures a high level of confidentiality.  
�         As appropriate, represent the District�s legal interest during complex meetings, arbitrations, hearings, negotiations and telephone conversations. 
�        Develop legal strategies for District departments and groups as needed to ensure timely, complete provision of legal advice; reduce legal costs and amounts of legal judgments or settlements and maximize opportunities for departments and groups. 
�        Ensure that all managers and supervisors comply with applicable laws, policies and negotiated agreements.  Analyze and establish training programs to promote compliance with applicable policies and procedures. 
�        Conducts investigations and researches legal issues in the different areas of district operations to assist departments in making legally-defensible decisions. 
�        Legal Representation 
�        Represent the District in all stages of adversary proceedings, including labor grievances, civil rights complaints, appeals to Board, curriculum challenges and State Board of Education matters. 
�        Anticipate all potential litigation and administrative claims, gather necessary information, perform investigations and align resources. 
�        Juris Doctorate Degree 
�        Minimum of 5 years of experience, preferably in K-12 school law and/or working in a law firm representing school district clients. 
�        Must be licensed by Colorado Supreme Court as an active attorney. 
�        Ability to work with diverse communities.
