ABOUT SIGNATURE ACADEMIES
Signature Academies are four-year programs at WCSD high schools that provide students with rigorous and relevant curriculum that relates to different careers and industries. All Academies will provide opportunities for students to either get a head start on college by earning Advanced Placement or college credits or to receive an industry-recognized certification that will help jump start their career. ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Director of Career Technical Education (CTE) and Signature Academies is assigned to the Office of Academics and serves under the general direction of the Chief Academic Officer. The Director exercises general supervision and evaluation over programs and services provided by the CTE and Signature Academies Department. The Director will work collaboratively across offices and departments within the Washoe County School District, and with external partners such as the Nevada Department of Education (NDE) and public and private corporations, and university and college faculty in providing services related to curriculum, instruction and professional development. The Director performs related work as required.
Additionally, the Director will:
- Develop and continually refine the process and framework for High School Signature Academies, to include student selection, enrollment, marketing plans, community and business partnerships, development of curriculum pathways, alignment with post-K12 institutions, oversight of budget, professional development, mentoring and outreach programs and facility construction/modification projects.
- Collaborate with institutes of higher education in developing articulation agreements; building credit attainment pathways within policy and regulation as established by the NDE and the WCSD.
- Oversee departmental budget, which includes the Perkins Grant, Capital Projects bond monies, and private donations; work collaboratively with high school personnel, the WCSD Office of Business and Finance, State and Federal Grants Department, and other pertinent entities in forecasting budget needs; devise systems of accountability regarding budget expenditures.
- Supervise the CTE grant process which includes gathering requests from CTE teachers, presenting requests to Advisory Committees for approval, writing and revising grants, ordering equipment and supplies for teachers, inventory grant purchases, and preparing for the annual review by state CTE office.
- Ensure that instruction and assessment practices are aligned to the NDE’s CTE standards, Employability Skills for Career Readiness Standards, and evolving program completion requirements within scope of Nevada Administrative Code (NAC). Ensure compliance with all state and federal guidelines as outlined in the Nevada State Five-Year Plan for the Perkins Act of 2006. Provide professional development opportunities for CTE teachers.
- Collaborate with local bargaining units, and develop and nurture partnerships with local business groups and other organizations in building effective programs. Support eleven CTE Advisory Committees by recruiting and retaining members from business and industry, assisting the Advisory Committee chairs with agendas and goals and reporting to Advisory Committees via the CTE Annual Report and updates on Career and Technical Student Organizations.
- Develop and distribute periodic Signature Academy and CTE course catalogs; work collaboratively with the Office of Communications in developing and executing a communications plan in English and Spanish; respond to media inquiries promptly and seek additional avenues for publicizing Signature Academies and related events.
- Observe and evaluate various staff, review requisitions submitted by program personnel; ensure compliance with WCSD Purchasing regulations and monitor spending carefully to maximize utility of limited dollars; work collaboratively with the Office of Human Resources in recruiting and retaining highly-qualified personnel for both CTE and Signature Academy programs; participate in professional development activities and consult a variety of resources in keeping abreast of changes affecting secondary and post-secondary education programs; network with school districts with similar Academies to replicate and share best practices.
- Demonstrate knowledge of curriculum materials and their relationship to program goals and objectives; demonstrate knowledge of high school and middle school accepted practices; understand the skills necessary to reach diverse student populations; collaborate with middle schools and Family School Partnerships to outreach to all families and ensure they have access to the information and programming.
- In coordination with other WCSD offices and departments, make use of assessment data to evaluate programs and where needed provide training to assist schools in improving student achievement; monitor and track departmental KPIs, create department plan, provide periodic updates to the BOT, Academic Leadership Team, Operations Leadership Team, and Leadership Team; make procedural and marketing adjustments as needed.
- Use a variety of techniques/strategies to assess staff and personnel performance and progress toward the achievement of goals, and the effectiveness of the overall programs; foster constructive suggestions from teachers, principals and staff for improving programs.
- Use collaborative planning to help identify and accomplish the Department’s mission, goals and objectives; recruit, select and organize staff to assure the greatest potential for the accomplishments of the Department’s mission; facilitate the identification, training, and monitoring of staff to ensure effective support in accomplishing the goals of the District.
- Master’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university in administration or other area related to responsibilities
- At least two (2) years of teaching experience in secondary education (CTE teaching experience preferred)
- At least two (2) years of progressive administrative supervisory experience
- Possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Nevada School Administrator Endorsement
- Possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Nevada driver’s license with a driving record acceptable to WCSD

- Writing, listening, speaking, and providing direction
