The Mount Vernon City School District is seeking candidates interested in a Senior Architect vacancy.

The Senior Architect’s tasks are to be directed and prioritized by the Superintendent and/or designee.

Major Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Advise the Administration on all architecture and design projects and the selection of appropriate design professionals for these projects.

Performs general architecture design for various types of building projects of small difficulty and magnitude.

Reviews plans, specifications and estimates of costs for new construction and renovation projects.

Works with the administration and construction manager in the supervision of work performed by builders and contractors to ensure they are following the plans as per the contract.

Reviews and checks quantities for payment to contractors.

Analyzes special construction problems to determine the effect on construction costs.

Manage/review/communicate “Owner’s” design decisions on all architecture and design projects to ensure consistency and adherence to the District’s “Design Goals”.


For “Large Projects” – e.g., a school building roof, a new football field, addition to school building, re-wiring of a school building, and creation of science laboratories in schools, (requiring oversight by the District’s outside consultants), the Senior Architect will assist the administration with oversight of the project and coordinate the District’s responses to any direct request for Owner’s Input.


For “Small Projects”- e.g., replacement of auditorium seats, re-finishing gym floor, toilet and office renovations (that do not require oversight by the District’s outside consultants), the Senior Architect will provide direct oversight for “Design-Driven Small Projects” in furthering District “Design Goals” and shall oversee adherence and compliance with design direction in conjunction with District “Design Goals” together with by other District staff overseeing other Small Projects that can be expected to have a permanent impact on District Facilities or Grounds.
Assist the Administration with Owner’s direction and input to outside consultants regarding Concept Development and Scope Development for district projects.

Assist the Assistant Superintendent for Business & Operations and Facilities Director as needed with oversight and reporting regarding funding, budgeting and expenditures for all architecture and design projects.

Required Qualifications:

EXPERIENCE: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year College or school of Architecture with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and three (3) to five (5) years of experience in public school architectural work.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the principles of architectural design and layout, including public school architecture, thorough knowledge of the practices and standards in building construction, thorough knowledge of the use and characteristics of construction materials, elements of structural design and engineering terminology, thorough knowledge of NY State Education Department codes, good knowledge of the principles of practices of costs estimating as it relates to construction.

TYPE of LICENSE REQUIRED: NY State Architecture License.
