Assistant Professor-Elementary Generalist

The College of Idaho Education Department seeks a full time, tenure track, 9-month teaching faculty in Elementary Education, with a focus on literacy.  The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:

  • Terminal Degree (PhD/Ed.D) in Elementary Education, Literacy, or related field
  • Current Elementary/Literacy Public School license
  • Proven success and experience teaching elementary students serving diverse populations
  • Willingness to supervise 3-4 interns per term in local elementary classrooms (required)
  • Understanding of professional preparation in the context of the Liberal Arts
  • Commitment to a 5th Year Teacher Preparation/Internship program

Other duties and expectations include:

  • Preparing Elementary candidates for both the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Assessments, and Praxis exam/sub-tests in all Elementary content areas
  • Active research agenda
  • Serving on MAT thesis committees
  • Advising undergraduate and graduate students
  • Willingness to represent College of Idaho at regular meetings for Idaho State Department of Education Literacy initiatives

The candidate will be willing and able to teach the following classes, required for Elementary Education pre-certification and part of an accredited undergraduate/graduate internship program (typical load is 21-23 credits):

EDU 304 Development of Literacy (3 credits)

EDU 305 Content Literacy (3 credits)

EDU 306 Writing Process and Assessments (3 credits)

EDU 350 Literature for Children and Adolescence (3 credits)

EDU 532 Language Arts Methods for Elementary Teachers (2 credits)

EDU 533 Social Studies Methods for Elementary Teachers (2 credits)

EDU 597 Intern Seminar (1 credit, rotated among other department faculty)

EDU 596 Practicum (student teaching) in Elementary (1-3 credits)

 

There will also be an opportunity to develop and enhance the Literacy minor, currently staffed by adjunct instructors, and include the following classes.  Depending on the terminal degree and specialty, the ideal candidate may choose (but not required) to teach the following:

EDU 253 Language Development and Literacy, (3 credits)

EDU 352, Diagnosis and Remediation; (3 credits)

EDU 451 Practicum in Reading (3 credits)

EDU 512 Linguistics; (3 credits and also required for English majors/secondary teachers)

EDU 503, Second Language Acquisition Theory (3 credits)

 

Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States as of the expected hire date and throughout the date of the contract without sponsorship from The College of Idaho.
