Personnel Services announces an opening for the position of Assistant Superintendent of Information Services. This is a twelve-month position, Grade P/E 19, on the administrative and supervisory salary scale with a salary range of $102,042 to $151,044 (2009-2010 salary schedule).
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK The Assistant Superintendent of Information Services directs and manages the information technology program of the Arlington Public Schools. Programs include Planning and Evaluation, Technology Services, Special Projects, Engineering and Technical Services, Technology Integration Solutions, Training and Support Services, Information Systems, and Network and Infrastructure Services. The incumbent provides leadership in monitoring and administering the planning, testing, evaluation and information systems for the school system, as well as the strategic integration of technology into classroom and administrative practices.
Executive level duties are performed under general direction of the Superintendent. Direct reports include the Director of Technology Services; Director of Planning and Evaluation; and Special Projects Coordinator who supervise a large staff of professional, technical, administrative support, and clerical staff.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK • Provides leadership and oversight to the supervisory, administrative, professional, and support staff assigned to the department. • Recommends staff for hire as well as trains, supervises, and evaluates staff. • Advises the Superintendent on policies and procedures affecting information technology services and Planning and Evaluation. • Provides interdisciplinary coordination and cooperation among various offices within the Information Services Department, schools, county government, and other departments within the school system. • Attends and participates in meetings of the School Board and other groups to represent and explain information technology matters and to provide other advice and counsel as appropriate. • Serves as the Superintendent’s representative to advisory committees and other groups as required. • Provides leadership in the compilation, analysis and use of data to improve student learning. • Guides Arlington Public Schools strategic planning activities which require meeting local, state and federal accountability requirements. • Develops partnerships with colleges and universities, corporations and government organizations to promote the successful integration of technology into instructional and administrative practices. • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES • Broad knowledge of the methodology, procedures and practices of the services provided by the Information Services Department. • Skill in managing and directing the operations of a broad range of activities through subordinate managers to successfully carry out information technology support activities. • Skill in designing, developing, and directing the implementation of plans and programs. • Ability to provide strategic guidance and counsel in the assessment and development of existing and proposed systems. • Ability to interpret statistical data, technical reports and research studies, and to present complex information to varied audiences. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with APS administrative, technical support staff, both central and center based; school board; county senior staff members; citizens; state department of education; state legislators; county board members; and other federal and state officials. • Ability to communicate skillfully, both orally and in writing, including preparing complex reports and making formal presentations.

SELECTION PROCESS All selected candidates will be interviewed by a screening committee chaired by the Assistant Superintendent for Personnel Services who will submit a report to the Superintendent. The Superintendent will interview the finalist(s) and forward a recommendation to the School Board for selection.
