Job Description

The School District of the City of Erie is an outstanding educational institution comprised of fifteen elementary schools, two middle schools, three high schools and one career and technical school. The district’s approximately 13,000 students are well served by a tremendous teaching corps of over 1,100 educators, 42 administrators, and 414 support staff that work tirelessly to serve the needs of the student body every day. Without question, Erie City’s students measure up quite favorably with peers throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The district has received state and national recognition for programs, including special education and college preparatory academic offerings. The School District of the City of Erie is the first in the “overachiever” category, providing the best possible education to all students, an accomplishment that notes their rising PSSA scores and the fact that the district has made AYP in the past four years. The School District of the City of Erie is simply filled with many opportunities for students to grow intellectually and socially. Erie City schools are poised for instructional leadership. The next superintendent will be required to build upon these successes to creatively execute the board’s objectives and continuously improve a professional culture of achievement.

The Community
Located in Erie County, Pennsylvania in the far northwestern part of the commonwealth, the City of Erie School District serves a city of over 103,000 residents. The residents in this city enjoy a culture that blends a wonderful mix of commerce, education, business, the arts and humanities, and entertainment. The major occupations of the residents include management, professional and related careers. The city also boasts a manufacturing sector that employs 22 percent of local jobs. Erie City is a day trip to Buffalo, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, all of which offer their own cultural, recreational and educational opportunities. Erie is the fourth largest city in Pennsylvania and is Pennsylvania’s only lake port city.

The Superintendent’s Position
The City of Erie School District is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of superintendent of schools in an exciting district. Qualified candidates are invited to apply. The ideal candidate must possess honesty and integrity; be open-minded and willing to listen with a sincere interest in the education of young people; have the ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholder groups; be skilled in selecting, motivating and evaluating staff and principals; be knowledgeable about the current educational trends, research and innovative practices; and understand how to obtain state and federal funds. Also, the next superintendent must have strong communication skills with effective interpersonal relations in order to collaborate effectively with district-wide stakeholder groups.
