The Dean holds a leadership position within the school, providing management oversight and performing specifically defined roles within the leadership structure.
The essential duties of a school leader include the following three elements:
1) Effectively Managing People
2) Building an intentional Culture
3) Leading Instruction
The responsibilities of someone in a Dean position include the following:
1) Management of instructional staff (including observation, semi-annual evaluation, weekly one-on-one meetings with staff members, and coaching)
2) Regularly lead grade-level meetings
3) Regularly lead / contribute to staff meetings as a facilitator or trainer
4) Serve on the school leadership team
5) Plays a contributing role on the School Improvement team
6) Effectively model and manage all elements of the school culture (through actions and feedback)
7) Oversight responsibility for at least one of the following areas within the school:
a. Special education accommodations and interventions
b. Classroom management & Discipline
c. Curriculum & instructional strategies
d. Moral focus and school culture
8) Provide regular professional development to members of the school community (including individual, small group, grade-level, or staff-level training).
The role of the Dean in a shared and distributed leadership model is to manage a subset of the school and provide primary responsibility for various areas of leadership across the building. The goal is to ensure that the all the areas of responsibility have specific ownership from one member of the leadership team.
Tasks Assumed by all Deans
1) Oversight and monitoring of Moral Focus curriculum integrated into lesson design and delivery
2) Delivery of Professional Development
3) Weekly observation, coaching and feedback with one-on-one conversations with all teachers assigned.
4) Classroom management and social contracts
5) Student discipline
6) Monitoring of Special Education students in settings they were observing and providing feedback
7) Weekly monitoring of lesson plans to prescribed template
8) Facilitation of wing and grade level meetings as assigned.
